The term “sexting” has been around for the past few years. The official definition is “the act of sending sexually explicit messages or photographs, primarily between mobile phones”. Celebrities have been caught doing this action, to name a couple: Rihanna and Brett Favre.
The OPP wants you to know the downsides of sexting, otherwise known as “self-peer exploitation”. An announcement today stated that teens who “frequently engage in relationships with peers through the use of their mobile devices” might fall victim to the message “mindlessly” leaving the intended person. The OPP says the message could possibly be passed along to others who’ll eventually post them online on social networking sites.
The end result for the individual sending this “harmless fun” action could lead to “shame and embarrassment”, while the person receiving and sharing the pic/video might face criminal charges of distribution of child pornography. Ouch. Be careful out there… the OPP has warned you. “Once it’s out there, you can’t get it back.”
