Samsung Galaxy Gio launching Monday, $150 outright

The internal docs that we had it showed the Samsung Galaxy Gio with an August 4th launch date, for some unknown reason this was pushed back a few days and will apparently be released on Monday. Shipments have started to arrive and both Bell and Virgin will have this available. We’re hearing there is no data plan required and the price tag for this entry level Android is on the cheap at $149.99 outright, $0.00 on a 3-year. Specs have this running OS 2.3, a 3.2-inch display and a 3 megapixel camera.

(Thanks tipsters!)

decent phone, the price is okay, but 3 MP camera…

It’s good for smartphone beginners thats all I am going to say

Hey if you go to Rogers homepage and look at the first phone in the unlimited student plan it actually resembles the Samsung attain which is a at&t variant of the s2 if you look closely it looks like that is an at&t logo at the top of the phone this is speculation though

    Unlimited students plan *ad

Never mind I totally forgot that Rogers offers the infuse which that is

  • Lucas

wow i thought this was gonna be a $250 phone. Really cheap price. good for kids getting their first phone.

For people living out of urnan zones, this is a great phone for local calling. Depending on your needs, you may unlock it for a low cost so that it works nationwide with Koodo.

Those who will stick to zones will probably want Mobilicity’s Samsung Mini Android. The plans cost much less there, with an unlimited Internet add-on when you stay in their zone.

Who here has tried the HTC Wildfire S?

    • Virgin Mobile Rep

I did try both. HTC is still my first choice for build quality and sense UI (plus it has a flash and 5mp camera). Plus HTC = Gorilla Glass and Gio= Plastic screen. But at $150, you can’t go wrong with the Gio.

Seems like a response to the Optimus One.

  • Sean

What i would like to see would be mobilesyrup doing a comparison of the best budget phone. They have done some comparisons before but i think that would be one of the better ones

    • Neal

Absolutely agreed! There’s starting to be more mid-level phones coming out as new, instead of having to sift through 2+ year old phones that can’t do much and are now overpriced. Many of us could have modest needs, don’t intend to unlock or mod the phone, just use it now and then and want to play a bit with things. Get to it MobileSyrup! :)

Like i have an iPhone and i’d like a good mid range android phone but which one there are so many. Optimus one, this the wildfire the status so many mid range. The high end get all they hype and reviews that one rarely hears about the mid range till they are being released. Heck if i had the money to buy a few of the mid rangers (or was even supplied with them) i would definitely go through and give them a great comparison.

That’s one thing i like about this site the wildfire s has just a long review as the galaxy s 2

  • Graham

When will this phone be getting a review? My fiance is looking for a smaller smartphone with no hardware keyboard, and this looks alright (i have the galaxy vibrant, and swore at it constantly until my buddy found me the upgrade to 2.3.3 which made out much more pleasurable, so I am expecting this to be sort of similar). However, I always make bad decisions when it comes to technology.

  • Mark

Specs or not, at $150 this is so worth it.

  • david J

can you guys please tell me if i can ONLY buy the phoene?
    (no contracts)
and if i can, plz tell me where i can buy phones

p.s. can i buy phones from cell phone booths?

    THANKS

  • Mr.Question

Does this phone support adobe flash?

  • marion

I may switch to bell with this launch!

  • anon

    so…where is it?

  • schultzter

The Bell web site is showing $250 No Contract price – same as the Wildfire; and it isn’t on the Virgin Mobile site yet but I expect the price would be same.

For the same price as a Wildfire why would you buy a Gio? The Wildfire has a better camera, a flash, and like someone else said: Gorilla glass.

  • nittamex

This phone is $69.99 at Zellers with no contract.

  • Darkshado

I bought mine on Tuesday with the Zellers special (which I think ends today), to keep as a backup for my Nexus S. Fine little phone, especially at that price.

Consider getting a screen protector since the screen is plastic, not glass. Otherwise the build quality is good.

Rooted it and unlocked it, for free, by following a tutorial on XDA. Be careful however as there have been multiple bricking reports, so do your homework. The executive summary: use the method involving “Root Explorer” that remounts the entire filesystem as read-only after unmounting the /efs partition.

yeh i’m hoping to get the phone very soon and cant wait to use it :)
