  1. Still says pre-order on the site, but I did notice this:
    “Platform / Operating System:
    Google™ Android (ver. TBA)”

  3. Meh.

The first time I saw this phone, its appearance and industrial design caught my attention. Specs leaked in, 1GHz snapdragon, 8MP camera, 4″ LED backlit screen, capacitive touch. Then as more news came in about how the phone would be limited in certain ways (you can Google this I’m sure), phone became less appealing.

So… average phone for exorbitant price off-contract, with a really bad provider… no thanks.

You’d be much better off buying a Nexus One from Google and going Wind instead.

The Rogers/Bell/Telus/AT&T version of the Nexus One is available on Google’s website.

  5. I work for Rogers and asked the 1.6 question to a Sony rep and he said it’s only temporarily running 1.6. They said it was currently more stable to release it with 1.6 and do some rigorous testing with Android 2. They said they’re trying to avoid any problems with it right off the bat like the Nexus One had. Because of timescape, mediascape, and the infinite features they want to go with a earlier version of the operating system. He said that, for sure, it is going to be updated, especially since it’s their flagship device.

  7. I managed to pick one of these up on Tuesday, April 13th. I happened to be in a Rogers Plus store and they had just received their inventory of phones. I asked if I could do a phone upgrade and to my surpise they did it.

The phone certain looks nice, but there are a few things I noticed which could/will get annoying.

    1. The screen smudges very easily and I am always cleaning it.

    2. You CANNOT use VOICE DIALLING to initiate a call from your Bluetooth earpiece. If you use the phone to initiate the call then you can listen/talk via bluetooth, but you cannot use voice commands to say “Call name…” from the bluetooth device. This apparently is a problem with all Android phones which I was not aware of so I was rather disappointed when I found that out after I purchased the phone. I am surprise that Google would not have implemented this feature and was something I just assume worked given that it is a pretty standard feature on any phone.

    3. Would have preferred that the USB port was placed on the bottom of the phone. Makes it easier to use while charging.

    4. It doesn’t appear that this phone will have any sort of Car dock like the Milestone has given that there is no port that it could plug into.

    5. Sony does not sell any sort of protective case for the phone yet, but I am sure it is just a metter of time.

As I get more time to play with the phone, I will be in a beetter position to judge the whole Timescape thing. Seems like a pretty slick feature.

  9. If there’s one thing I learned from my HTC Hero days…. NEVER buy a non-Google branded Android phone. They are always horribly lagging behind in the OS.

My N1 is running 2.1update1 and the Hero is still running 1.5! Ridiculous!!

  10. Um Jim, you understand the N1 is manufactured by HTC and that as soon as Google sells their next OS to another hardware manufacturer (perhaps back to motorola in advance like the Droid before N1) your N1 will be as dated as the Hero.

  11. Somewhat interested in the phone, but definitely not the price (and the fact that it’s on Rogers). Maybe Sony will do better next time…. In the meantime, though, I’ll be going with an N1, rooting it, and throwing the Desire ROM on it. Like Bong Sniffer already said, open source is the shizzle :P

Unlike all other Android phones made by HTC, the Nexus One is sold exclusively by Google, and is branded as the Google Nexus One, not HTC Nexus one. Is the droid called the Google Droid? No, it’s the Motorola Droid, and for that reason Google will be supporting the Nexus One before all other handsets.

  14. I gave it back.

The X10 has some serious issues. The crapware Sony put on it is really dragging the CPU down. Linpack benchmarks are down some 50% compared to the Nexus One. The performance and battery life of this phone are both terrible!
