TELUS Motorola Milestone sees first price drop to $149.99 on 3-year

The Motorola Milestone came out blazing with its Android OS 2.0.1 goodness a few weeks back. Good news as TELUS has now officially dropped the 3-year contract price by $50 to a low $149.99. This launched back on February 16th so here’s hoping next month this beast of a device will drop below the $100 mark…

Check it out here at TELUS

  1. Hmm, I wonder if their sales are already slumping now that word is out that the bootloader is locked? Not too mention the problems people are having.

  2. I went to a Telus store last week ready to purchase the Milestone. I was the only customer in the store and all 3 sales reps basically told me to absolutely not get this phone.
I was so excited to get on the android boat but they said its a waste of money, people were returning them etc.
They also were very against my unlocking it to Rogers as they were 100% sure it would void my warranty (which it wouldn’t)
Anyways, of course they’re gonna lose customers this way and they did. They turned me off from it.

Good news tho .. At Best Buy last night I was told the X10 would be available early May!

  3. That was fast. Blocking root access made sense, eh?

  4. i doubt its because the ” boot loader” is locked i bet over 80% of customers dont even know what that is lol

  5. I also doubt that it has anything to do with the bootloader. I think one problem might be related to the fact that they don’t allow you to actively demo the Milestone in store. I mean, I went to 5 stores, 2 in Hamilton, 3 in Toronto, and noone of them had demos in store. So why would anyone want to buy a phone they can’t try????????

  6. I think the price on a 3 year obligation is irrelevant and shouldn’t even be reported as a “price drop”.

I know, no one is forced to sign a 3 year deal, and they wouldn’t if the pricing structure was reasonable. eg save $150 for a 1 year term; $300 for a 2 year term; $450 for a 3 year term. Sounds logical to me. Instead what do we get? Save $50 for a 1 year term; save $100 for a 2 year term; save $450 for a 3 year term. Absolutely revolting.

As long as we look at the price of phones the way the big 3 want us to, ie by locking into a 3 year contract, we’ll remain the only country on earth where these insane 36 month prisons are the norm.

  7. I don’t know clay. I would bet that a majority of the early buyers are enthusiasts wanting the Canadian version of the Droid.
Now, if sales were dropping after Telus had a decent amount of time to advertise I wouldn’t necessarily attribute it to the lock.
I know I wouldn’t have bought one if I knew the bootloader was locked, but that’s the price I paid for buying one a day or two after release. Hopefully the rash of negative posts on their forums and elsewhere will inspire a change of heart but my hopes aren’t high.

I’m just hoping for something current from HTC compatible with our 3G comes along soon. The Milestone will likely be on ebay shortly after.

  8. Hmm, I wonder why they’re already doing a price drop. Well, I’m really enjoying mine right now. It really trumps everything else that is out there. Anyone looking to buy a powerful smartphone should definitely give the milestone a chance.

Maybe sales aren’t good because it’s not as dumbed down as an iPhone or a BlackBerry. Android can still be intimidating for new users.

  9. if they dropped the 2year instead i am sure it would be better than dropping the 3 year price. the difference is too much.

  10. @TJ Think logically man, where do you think the sales people make the most of their money? iPhone or Milestone?

Also, why would they endorse buying a phone from them straight up when they make zilch on the sale when it comes to commission.

  11. Bootloader or not, this is still a better phone than the iPhone 3G and 3GS I previously owned. I severely doubt the lack of a bootloader is affecting sales.

My rep mentioned 60% of Future Shop/Best Buy Milestone sales were outright purchases, most of which were unlocked.

  12. @justin isn’t it the most frustrating thing ever! after seeing telus advertise the milestone quite heavily in the montreal area, i was assuming there would be a working model to ‘play’ with in store. no such luck. like you said, who wants to sign up for a 3 yr plan, or even just buy ANYTHING without having the chance to tinker with it at least a bit??? quite sad.

Also, the telus store in the mall i visited was packed…but from the coversations I overheard they were mostly about returns, problems and billing errors.

won’t be switching to telus anytime soon.

  13. Agreed, the Moto lock on Bootloader is a huge piss off..but i doubt it would contribute anymore then 5% to the loss of sales. Early adopters are the only ones turned off from such a limitation.. @Clay is correct…most people don’t care. the bigger contributor would be the f*****g horrible branding and marketing of Telus, coupled with the fact that no carrier in Canada has any intelligent business reason to entertain “Exclusivity”
    on hardware…such a stupid thing.

  14. I also went to five Telus stores in the Montreal area & was refused a peek at a working model.Price drop or no,I will never buy anything before a test drive. What,Telus doesn’t have the cash to set aside one unit per store as a demo?Won’t even think of buying one until they do….on principle.

  15. While the boot loader is still locked, the phone has been rooted to the point that you can install rooted apps and edit files in the system, just not the kernel

  16. Glad to see the price drop. was going to pick one up last friday. my issue was I was two weeks shy of renewal. agents at the store let me play with one(i’m in niagara region) and were all for it but the phone rep shot me down. glad I will be paying $50 less when I do get it. may be mistaken but I believe someone has cracked the rooting.

  17. What a misleading headline. The price hasn’t dropped at all – it’s still $599. The only change is that the incentive to lock in for 3 years has increased.

  18. I plan to purchase only phones that can be unlocked.

telus has this idea that every 3G+ phone must be locked, even with outright purchase…after my contract…I doubt I will use Telus, they have gone from best of the worse or worse of the worse.

They can’t suck and blow at same time…they want customer to bring their unlocked phones to Telus’s network…however, will not unlock phones they sell…

Too bad all the executives that know how to run a wireless company left Telus for bell…must be the F*&^ing lawyers running the show now or some other equally stupid people….

  19. Telus won’t unlock the phone even if you ask them to? I’m surprised, even Bell is more open to unlocking.

  20. I was more surprised that Telus didn’t have accessories for the Milestone. I didn’t expect Future Shop or Best Buy to take space away from the 30 different iPhone cases to have one for the Milestone. Telus on the other had is the carrier. Import some Droid cases and slap a bilingual sticker on them.

Future Shop had a live demo. Only tied to their wifi but it let me try the keyboard and maps. One rep was enthusiastic about the phone so that was nice to see.
