During Samsung’s “Unpacked” event at IFA they declared that Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note 10.1 owners can expect to receive the OS upgrade to 4.1 “very soon.” They gave no word on timing, however, according to a post on CNET UK, Samsung stated “the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system will be available on the Galaxy S3 from October.” Still pretty vague, but slightly a bit clearer. Unfortunately, this is probably country specific and us Canadians will see the upgrade a few weeks later as all our carriers (Rogers, Bell, TELUS, WIND, Mobilicity, SaskTel, Videotron, Virgin) have to complete their internal testing. We’ve reached out to Samsung Canada for an estimated timing on when the Jelly Bean upgrade will land on our device.

Samsung recently announced that the Galaxy S III has topped 20 million in sales in 100 days, selling approximately 200,000 per day, and smashing their previous record of selling 20 million Galaxy S II’s in 10 months.

Update: We’ve heard from our sources that the GS III upgrade to OS 4.1 Jelly Bean will hit Canadian device “sometime in Q4.”

Wow, this is awesome. I got this phone in June and in October JB will be out for it. I’m came from a Motorola Milestone. i guess every past motorola user knows how slow they are with updates.

  • Kakarot

I’m running the JB miui rom now, fantastic!

A few days ago I woke up to find a software update for my Telus S III. I thought it was Jelly Bean but ended up being ICS 4.0.4. Looking forward to the October update.

Hey Samsung Canada. Where is Jelly Bean for the GNex???

    • Chris

My heart skipped a beat yesterday when my gnex had an update – Jelly Bean is finally here! Turns out it was just the 4.0.1 -> 4.0.2 update. Sigh, I’m feeling pretty ripped off at this point considering I bought into the “pure google experience that gets updates first”.

  • That’s what I’m talking about!

That’s what I’m talking about! Happy to see it’s getting JB so soon, some people are happy that their devices are getting ICS, when there’s already an other OS available (Jelly Bean) carriers should be trying to get JB instead of ICS….

  • David

So Rogers will release the update sometime in 2013?

  • ChrisArchitect

4.1.1 JB update just arrived on my Bell gnex this morning!

I just installed the CM10 M Rom on my Galaxy S3 yesterday, and yes Jelly Bean is a big difference in how smooth and snappy the device runs.

curious to see what the official Samsung Rom brings.

Would like to know how difficult it was to switch to CM10 on your phone. I’d love to make the change, if only to get rid of the Bell bloatware, but I’m pretty nervous about bricking my phone and getting an earful from my wife.

Did you find a specific thread that has step by step for the Bell version.

was trying to wait for this before going on the aosp side of things but I couldn’t make it and am now running AOKP. no regrets :D

  • Bryan

Hey, Eddie – I’m curious too… how do you find the user experience with CM10 and none of the Samsung customized UI? What specific instructions did you follow?

  • Andrew
