Big changes are reportedly coming to Twitter’s timeline next week [Update]

Update 02/06/16: Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey took to Twitter this afternoon and emphasized that the platform is here to stay, and the company will “continue to refine it to make Twitter feel more, not less, live!” Dorsey also noted that the real-time service will become “more Twitter-y.”

Big changes could be coming to Twitter next week. No, not just the increase in the 140-character limit, but the core of Twitter’s user experience and how its timeline is structured.

Twitter is reportedly set to change its timeline from a reverse chronological order, which is based on time, to an algorithmic format that’s organized by what’s most relevant from the accounts you follow, according to a report from BuzzFeed. This is similar to how Facebook has organized its newsfeed.

The report indicates that the company has been testing the algorithmic timeline with a small group of users for some time. However, Twitter declined to comment on the possible changes.

Twitter recently launched new services, such as Twitter Moments (which is coming to Canada soon), and also expanded direct messages to 10,000 a character limit.

On the rumours of an increased character limits within a timeline, CEO Jack Dorsey said, “we didn’t start Twitter with a 140 character restriction. We added that early on to fit into a single SMS message (160 characters). We’re not going to be shy about building more utility into Twitter for people. As long as it’s consistent with what people want to do, we’re going to explore it.”

An algorithmic format is possibly not the experience users are looking for on Twitter. The #RIPTwitter has been trending worldwide and in Canada.
