Apple CEO Tim Cook rules out possibility of iOS, OS X merger in recent interview

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook recently dispelled speculation his company’s mobile iOS operating system and its OS X laptop and desktop OS will combine at some point in the future.

In an interview with Irish newspaper Independant, Cook said combining the two operating systems wouldn’t make sense for Apple or for its customers.

“We feel strongly that customers are not really looking for a converged Mac and iPad,” said Cook.

“Because what that would wind up doing, or what we’re worried would happen, is that neither experience would be as good as the customer wants. So we want to make the best tablet in the world and the best Mac in the world. And putting those two together would not achieve either. You’d begin to compromise in different ways.”

Cook also says he doesn’t feel Apple has brought OS X and iOS closer together and says his company offers two very different operating systems.

“It’s true that the difference between the X86 and the A-series is much less than it’s ever been. That said, what we’ve tried to do is to recognise that people use both iOS and Mac devices. So we’ve taken certain features and made them more seamless across the devices. So with things like Handoff we just made it really simple to work on one of our products and pick it up and work on the next product,” said Cook.

While rumours related to a converged Apple OS have waned over the last few years, the release of Apple’s enterprise-focused iPad Pro has brought this speculation back to the forefront. Many critics feel the iPad Pro is held back by its ability to only run iOS and that the Pro would be a more useful product if it took advantage of OS X.
