With the recently announced LG-made Nexus 5X and Huawei-manufactured Nexus 6P, Google and its manufacturer partners are making a significant push to improve the Nexus line’s camera performance.
Both the Nexus 5X and 6P are set to feature 12.3 megapixel camera sensors, dual LED flash, and an impressive f/2.0 aperture lens – all with 4K video shooting capabilities. Front-facing cameras on both devices measure in at 8 megapixels and also feature HDR+, which will help improve low light camera performance.
Google also claims that both the 5X and 6P’s camera sensors “provide 92 percent more light collecting efficiency.”
And along with these hardware upgrades, comes a more feature rich Nexus camera app with a revamped user interface.
Google’s new camera app supports slow-motion video at 240 frames per second (fps) and 120fps shooting, as well as a new HDR mode that automatically switches on in low light conditions.
Another new feature called Smart Burst allows users to hold down the camera shutter button and snap bursts of photos taken at 30fps. The feature works similar to burst mode on a DSLR and is only supported by the Nexus 6P. Smart Burst essentially allows users to create short animated .gifs relatively quickly.
Camera performance has plagued Google’s Nexus line for a number of years, but with the 6P and 5X it looks like the company is finally taking photography more seriously.
