LG’s newest tablet looks 2015 with 2013 specs

A week before the start of IFA, LG is teasing its latest tablet, a particularly uninteresting product.

The G Pad II 10.1 is an Android slate running LG’s Android 5.1.1 skin on a 10.1-inch 1920×1200 pixel LCD display. The chassis looks fairly modern, with slim bezels and a nice grippy back, but the internals are transplanted from a couple of years ago: a 2.26Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chip, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.

While the Snapdragon 800 is still plenty powerful, it’s certainly not a new part, and may affect the tablet’s upgrade path, since Qualcomm has to support it. Inside, a 7,400mAh battery is squashed into a 7.8mm-thin shell, along with a 5MP rear camera and 2MP front shooter.

LG claims that the device will be coming to North America, saying nothing specific about Canada, though history tells us it will in some capacity. The company is attempting to differentiate itself from Samsung’s Tab A series, which features lower-resolution displays.

The G Pad II 10.1 was developed in response to consumers’ feedback and optimized for multimedia consumption.” according to Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications for LG Mobile. “Customers asked for a large display, bigger battery and faster performance all without raising the price. The G Pad II delivers on all counts.”

Software features like a nighttime reading mode that reduce sleep-reducing blue light, and a deal with Microsoft to pre-load Office for Android, seem to be, in LG’s mind, reasons to choose the G Pad II 10.1 over the competition. We’ll have to test one to see, but in the meantime if you find yourself in Hall 18 of IFA’s Messe Berlin convention centre between September 4th and 9th, give it a visit.
