Uber for iPhone and Android gains fare splitting in latest update

Uber, the on-demand taxi service for your smartphone, has until now relied on payment from one person regardless of how many occupants share the cab, black car or SUV.

In an update today, the company, which operates in Toronto and 34 other cities around the world, has added fare splitting to its iPhone and Android apps, allowing users to separate the cost of a pick-up between riders. The procedure itself is simple, relying on tapping on a link embedded in a text message, but those who wish to participate must install the app.

In an increasingly heated market, the addition of fare splitting gives the edge to Uber over rivals Hailo and local incumbents Beck and Diamond.
