Apple has started a app countdown once again, this time towards to massive 50 billion app download milestone. Similar to their previous celebration of reaching 25 billion app downloads, Apple will be giving away a $10,000 gift card to whoever downloads the fifty billionth app. In addition, following the 50,000,000,000 app download Apple will give 50 people a $500 gift card – which brings the total value of the contest to $35,000 (USD).

At the time of writing this the countdown clock shows just over 42,000,000,000 app downloads.

Update: It’s been 11 days and there’s been over 7 billion apps downloaded, now sitting at about 49,900,000,000 app downloads. Most likely, in Apple fashion, they’ll announce the 50 billion app download milestone once Google I/O officially starts on Wednesday, May 15th (9am PST).
