iPhone 6, not 5S, to follow last year’s model, according to developer logs

We’re sorry in advance for causing any disturbances in the Force but on this, the second day of 2013, we’re already talking about the next iPhone. Forget for a moment that the iPhone 5 debuted in September, just over three months ago, and that we haven’t even heard how many millions of devices Apple sold during the holiday season, but sales are only half of the game when it comes to Cupertino. The company invariably uses Rumour, with a capital R, to its advantage in the months between releases. Whether these leaks are from official sources or not makes little difference — though it is interesting that a few publications such as the Wall Street Journal gain access earlier than most — because once they’re out there, energy builds on its own.

Today’s rumour comes from developer logs claiming that a device known as ‘iPhone 6,1′ is being tested from IP addresses that point to Apple’s Cupertino campus. For the record, the iPhone 5 is known to developers as ‘iPhone 5,1′ and ‘iPhone 5,2′ depending on the make and model so it would seem fair to assume that the newer logs are pointing to an unreleased device. While it’s possible that the phone will be released as the iPhone 5S, as Apple has traditionally used “off” years as iterative upgrades with little visual overhaul, the company could have found ways to improve the oft-criticized manufacturing iPhone 5 build quality. The device, due to its aluminum build, is prone to chipping and scratches, necessitating the use of a protective case in many situations.

The developer logs also point to early builds of iOS 7, which seems likely since the company will probably introduce a new version of its mobile operating system at WWDC in June. Other than the points to new devices and software, however, there is no other news, which is exactly what Apple wants.

    • Batman

      Can you read?
“One developer showed us that Apple has been testing hardware relating to a new ‘iPhone6,1′ identifier, powered by a device running iOS 7, which is expected to be released by Apple in the middle part of this year.”

    • JUST SAYING

don’t fight guys if its an 5S or a 6 both will be garbage

Just got a new stand for iPhone 5. Now have to take a Drehmel to it to make room for the stupid headphone jack on the BOTTOM?

I knew this was a STUPID design decision – now I have proof..!

Some people actually USE headphones to make calls APPLE! Now? I have to mess up a new product or take the phone out of the stand to plug in the headphones.

Wishing I never sold my 4S now. Just for this as I use it for a business phone and love my Urbanears head phones.

    FIX this.

Happy New Year guys, been a long time coming, but man, this iPhone 6 sounds amazing

  • sunvv

just get rid of the home button and add aws band support, I’ll get one finally.

  • andy c

the only updates i can see on the hardware side are the following:

    1. increase screen size
probably not going to happen in the near future. i can see apple staying at 4 inches until the 4S loses the latest IOS support.

    2. NFC/mobile wallet
some people may care but i dont care much for mobile payments. besides, i can’t see many merchants paying to upgrade there pay terminals just so they can support mobile payments.

    3. aws support.
sorry but unless Wind or Mobilicity will be offering LTE i’ll take a pass.

  • Haxor99

I’m hoping for an Iphone 6 with all newly designed adapters and plugs and a new pico-sim… DIE APPLE DIE

Wow, no way! Apple are working on their next yearly release device? Such news!

A whole long article that can be summed up by “Apple working on new iPhone. We have no details about anything regarding it. ”

This is a waste of space mobilesyrup and make you look like Apple loving i d i o t s.

This site is nothing more then a fangirls blog now.

I’m guessing it has all those things Tim Cook said were “of no value to our customers” and that Samsung and Nokia have banked on since the iPhone 5 was dumped onto the marketplace. Prepare for more “Once upon a time there was a 3D smartphone made entirely of Unobtainium and unicorn tears…”

  • Jonny Tsang

Hahahahaha you’re all so angry. You are all losers.

    • yermom

      You mad, bro?

    • mark gnome

You sound upset that no one here like the iPhone but you. Like what you want. What’s with you iPhone using dor ks who need everybodys approval otherwise you come on the net saying things like “you are all losers” or “I can’t believe people are starting to not like the iPhone! Now what phone do I get to fit in?” Or “I’m g a y.”

Yes, most iPhone users probably have hidden ho mose xual desires but that isn’t enough reason to jump online and cry calling people losers.

That 3 year contract one an iPhone 5 that, aside from the processor itself, was old tech before the first one landed on a shelf still stinging? Better brace yourself then as Apple will be rubbing salt into that wound in short order. maybe they’ll say sorry for selling you a bad bag of Apples then again they might just blame you for badgering them into releasing an incomplete product. Yeah that’s likely it… it’s the Apple consumer’s fault for harbouring unrealistic expectations.

  • Mr.Mobile

Sorry when the Iphone 3 is still 385 out right and the Iphone 4 not even 4S is 550 for a messyily 8 gig Apple can eat s**t !! Not that I’d ever pay for their Crapple Products as I’m no Isheeep! • OMG BASEDGOD #taskforce #tybg

Hope you guys have a contest with this up for grabs. No phone makes you more money than selling an iphone…

  • screamer

My iphone is the best phone ever. I have an lightning connector. I also have iTunes and can open webpages without flash player. Than I need to put all my movies in mp4 but I am cool I have an iPhone. Than I have 64gig of storage and only paid 300 $ more than for an galaxy s3. But I am cool or?

    • phreezerburn

The iPhone 5 helps you lose weight. After changing all your cables and purchasing adapters, along with the purchase of the phone itself, you now can’t afford the chow it takes to get fat. That’s Apple, always thinking of their user’s… wallet.

Apple… so gorged on your dollars and a supply chain so tightly squeezed that the $0.30/hr raise to deflect public ire ends in implementing a formerly shelved plan that replaces 200,000 Chinese workers throughout the supply chain with robotics to restore those whopping iMargins.

Still the same old small-width screen crap that Apple has fed us since the iPhone4. When will Apple realize that in order to compete with the newer and bigger phones that it has to up the size of the iPhone. And I don’t mean by making it a tiny bit longer.

The “new” cable/adapter thing was also a dumb move. By releasing it Apple made dozens, if not hundreds of pre-iPhone 5 docks unusable. It’s as if Microsoft suddenly released their Windows desktop and made USB unusable. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I’ve been with Apple since their original MacBooks, and I was one of the early adopters for the iPhone 3G. Next phone I have is an Android because I’m unwilling to buy rotten crapware.

  • Sweet

This is contrary to every rumour I have heard to date, which say that the next iPhone will be named 5S and will have incremental improvements, like a better camera and faster processor, plus be available in the same colours as the latest iPod Touch and they’ll finally add NFC.

@Greg, it’s unlikely they’ll make the phone any wider. And the new connector is better than the previous one. Dropping the old connector is no different than dropping Firewire support. It’s progress. Out with the old and in with the new and improved. If you don’t want to change accessories, then buy an adaptor. One reason why Windows has been garbage for so long and why PC tech has lagged Macs in many areas for so long, is because they refuse to ditch antique technology.
