Google Maps for iOS downloaded more than 10 million times in first two days

We knew it would be popular, but Google Maps for iOS blasted an incredible 10 million downloads in its first two days of availability.

According to a Google+ post by the company’s Jeff Huber, the milestone app found its way to the top of the App Store charts after just a few hours, and the 10 million number is likely just the beginning. Considering the app has not been optimized yet for the iPad, that number will balloon once again when it is made into a universal app.

If you haven’t already, download Google Maps for iPhone.

Folks sure love the Apple apps don’t they?

  • Derp

Lol.. i find it terribly amusing that google can make a reliable map app before apple could fix its own mapping problems..

good way to convert people to something other than ios..

  • Jared

Apparently adding “via transit” to the end of any Siri location searches will force Siri to use Google Maps to do the lookup, instead of Apple Maps.

I’ve tried it a few time and it seems to work, but I don’t know how well it would work outside the GTA (in places where there’s no transit system)

Works fine in Quebec City too.

We’re enough a big city to have transit (woupwoup lol..)

iOS users better be happy, otherwise they’d have to use Apple Maps. Google could have not decided to push this out, but smart move by them.

Hey look a Google product being better than an Apple one. Huge surprise!

Wait… Isn’t that true for every single product they both put out? Oh it is? My bad.

Perhaps Apple, in their infinite wisdom, could have a popup prompting people to download Google Maps when they set up their Iphone so that their customers don’t get lost.

I thought you’ve got some mega balls, Apple. Why did you approve this app huh? Come on, make your own search engine, create your own free video streaming site, open up a new free e-mail service. I focking dare you.

    RIP APPLE MAPS!!!!!!!!!

I like apple maps, its still in its infancy, and was released too early, which is why the guy who overseen the operation was fired. I believe that when it’s refined it will be a reliable product on par with google maps.

10 million people disagree with you.

    • GT

And that leaves 190 Million that would agree so far. There are over 200 Million devices running iOS6.

ROFLMAO Next you’ll be saying Apple diddled their own maps just to allow Google a place on their desktop once again without having to come right out and openly admit such.

The owner of the single largest hedge fund on this planet, with more liquid assets at its disposal than most countries and the congregation gets the iPhone 5 as it was released and a copy of the little Galaxy Tab that craps all over years of “anything less than Retina is unacceptable” schtick. Someone has one hell of a sense of humour in Cupertino.

10 Million people think a map’s index should never start with “Once upon a time…”

  • Brad F(anboy)

Well, looks like everyone’s getting what they want:

Google gets to collect the information from its users that Apple refused to give them, and Apple gets the vector-based maps and turn-by-turn directions Google refused to give them.

And, in the end, customers win.

  • rick

what was that comment about “thermoneuclear war” that someone once said?

  • Ken

So how much money did Apple waste developing their own mapping app, just to have it utterly rejected by their customers?

    Looks good on them.

  • MrMastodonFarm

    @GT
I can’t even begin to describe how stupid your post is. Are you suggesting that because 190 million people didn’t download GoogleMaps in the first two days it means they prefer Apple Maps?

First of all, most people aren’t even aware it’s out yet, the numbers will continue to grow, hugely.

Secondly… an iPad version isn’t out either!

  • ace

they should have charged 2.99 for the app… people would still have bought it

  • jon

I guess Samsung won’t copy this version of Apple maps…
