Heins takes his BlackBerry 10 device to an NBA game, teases fans and takes pictures

Thorsten Heins, RIM’s CEO, and Andrew Bocking, RIM’s SVP of Software Product Management, were recently hanging court side at the LA Lakers/Phoenix Suns game and both were armed with the all-touch BlackBerry 10 device. Heins noted about a month ago that he was using his BB10 on a daily basis, so this could very well be the final hardware. They both look pleasantly happy snapping a few pics and I’m really curious if they’re using the Time Shift feature.

On Bocking’s device, which he’s putting away in a snazzy leather pouch, the bottom row on his homescreen shows the promised Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Foursquare apps. The official unveiling of BlackBerry 10 OS will be happening on January 30th, 2013.

  • Alex

And they don’t seem to tease anyone.

    • kris

Don’t worry the devices will be out in time for the 2016 NBA finals

    • Ojay

Heins was also seen pulling the battery to reset the device after it froze.

    • Yulick

RIM lays off half the company, sending employees on EI, and searching for food at the food bank…while Heins and his cronies are at an NBA game showing off smoke and mirrors

      RIP RIM

    • Farq

if the phone is “ready” why are they using it and not the public mass?

    • SAM

what an a“ hole he wants to be special!

    • SAM

why they don’t want to release it to public
      shame on you rim’s managment

    • SAM

look guys i have the bb10 and no one have it in Canada

you know what Heins keep it for yourself my galaxy s3 is away better i will stick with it

    • NotWorking

HTC,Samsung, Google, Nokia, Motorola ARE releasing phones that people CAN BUY and TOUCH; and the CEO of the only company that is not releasing a phone this season is watching a GAME???

The guy/rest of RIM should work 3 shifts 7 days aweek to release BB10 on time…having said that, fiv months from that they will have tons of time….to look for a new job!

This is EPIC! BB10 phones to come on Sale in March 2013 and the guy going to public games?

    • 2c

bb10 will come with apple maps?

      RIP RIM!!!!

  • Andrew F

As much as I love my Droid. I like how Blackberry is changing their game they might actually last. All they need to do is step up their internal specs. Still better than Apple.

  • sml156

    Where are the copyright police

  • Greg

Yeah no thanks Stephen Harper ( I know he’s not Harper )

    • EvanKr

I know, he looks like a younger Harper, I think it’s the Lego man hair…

    • don

I understand, Heins is the best CEO Rim has ever had, Steve Harper is the best Prime mister Canada has ever had. I too see the connection.

  • mike

Wow, they both look so happy !

    • Ivan

They are a Canadian company at a basketball game…they are upset they aren’t at a hockey game. I miss Hockey.

    • Joe

Blackberry is an old man’s phone. Something that my 52 dad uses.

  • Mike

Apple would never do that. Either you’ve got the product or u don’t for the consumers. Stop this show off it’s so childish.

    • don

Apple is dead unless they bring out something game changing! I bought Rim stock Oct 1st made $17700, if I had bought Apple I would have lost $16,093! Apple is done.

    • hoo dat

Apple just leaves their devices behind in seedy bars and such.

    • SAM

apple is even worse the did loose the iphone in a bar

  • hmmmm

Sadly the device seems too small to my taste…I would love the Qwerty but it will be even smaller…too bad Rim…but good luck

    • don

What do you want, you want to hold a Playbook or a Mini Pad up to your ear, phone don’t need to be as big as the galaxy note!

  • HikerCA

Ummm, yeah, those fans are all over them. “Aren’t they cute, gramps have Nokias” ;-)

  • Alex

BB; spending too much energy to look like everybody else.

    • Darth Paton

i did not know energy is a currency…

  • Boycott Bell Rep

rim is cutting more and more employees and losing more market share… and this is how they choose to spend their time and money? watching some NBA game?

    • don

That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard, they need PR, wait until they spend a Billion dollars advertizing BB10. They will have some amazing commercials, (I’m sure a few lame ones too, can”t be 100% all the time).

    • hoo dat

And you know that they didn’t pay for their own tickets how exactly?

    • Alex

OUR UPDATED SDK IS REALLY COOOOOL!

  • Alex

    Seen any bets on the:
    January 30th Announcement
    February 28th Preorder
    March 29th On sale.

    To me that’s a Q2 release.

    • hoo dat

      Actually, the official word is:

      Jan 30th announcement;

      10-14th of Feb key markets release;

15-25th of Feb, rest of world release.

    • Ron Mexico

Wow so are they expecting to sell a lot doing two separate releases? Lol I don’t think it will be necessary. Won’t be any people lining up for them.

    • Ron Mexico

Or maybe the initial release will be a run 500 handsets :D

    • don

March 29th, Apple will be out with their Iphone 5S by then, and I heard the only change they are making is changing the connection port to a mini USB and putting the letter “S” on it.

    • hoo dat

Why do separate releases? Have you seen the mess that Google made of the Nexus4, Nexus7 32GB and Nexus10 releases? People have paid their money and are being asked to wait 3-8 weeks (depending on location) and subsequent orders aren’t even getting a delivery date! THAT’s why you stagger a release.

Remember the debacle that was the initial release of the Nexus4? That was all due to Asus being rushed by Google to have a product ready when the QC resources weren’t in place. People had image shadowing, acute light bleed, ill fitting sreens and loose or missing screws and poor battery performance. THAT’s why you stagger a release.

    • hoo dat

Second paragraph should read “Nexus7″ not “Nexus4″.

    • Hardened

That’s because you cannot count the days or months in a calendar year.

      1 Quarter = 3 months
      4 Quarters = 1 year/12mths.
Say it with me boys and girls, January 1st until March 30th = 3 months inclusive. IF the “goes on sale” date is March 29th that is STILL in the 3mths thus 1 Quarter.

  • bembol

RIM just doesn’t get it. Samsung, Apple and even Nokia RELEASED their flagships before the big one, 12/21/2012. LOL They will never learn.

Seriously, it looks impressive inside out but I still believe it’s too little too late. Their competitor will be Nokia, for third or fourth place.

  • Sam

All I know is if there isn’t something “special” about this new phone it will be too little too late. I do wish them luck but I have zero reason to believe it won’t be more of the same catch up to android and Iphone nonsense.

    • QC_Al

You clearly haven’t read anything about it or seen any leaked articles or videos have you?

  • John

How many RIM employees are on here? Every comment on this site that is remotely unfriendly to RIM gets a slew of thumbs down. How about you guys stop auto hiding them and let me decide what I want to read.

    • hoo dat

Is it really that hard for you to hit “Click To See”?

    • Porilaisten

The anti-RIM comments are being “thumbed down” because they are grossly inaccurate.

    • confused

I agree. Why is almost everyone here such lemmings? Android lemmings and Blackberry lemmings everywhere. If Google or RIM made a brick out of sh*t and stuck a touchscreen or keyboard on it, it seems as if the lemmings here would support it and would love it and claim it as a great phone. This is pathetic.

  • John

Glad to see Heins has time to watch games while his Ottawa employees have to work 6 days a week with no vacation time. Get back to work Heins and set the example. Don’t expect your people to be slaves while you slack off.

  • Richard

John, I work 6 days a week. 2 days off is too much for me!

  • Morning Wood

Honestly, you are all talking about this being the make or break phone that will either take over the world or die. That is too binary. I think if its mildly successful it will give rim time to improve and then try and leapfrog everyone. This will not be the phone to leapfrog the others, it will at most bring them in line with teh times.\

    • phreezerburn

Having seen all of the available material as well as playing WoW with a developer and hearing about the disabilities enhancements, BB10 isn’t a minor anything. In many areas it isn’t a matter of pulling along side of iOS, Windows or Android but showing them the tail lights for a ns before vanishing into the distance. None of the phones thus far has shown me they can make up for my dyslexia but I’ve been told the BB10′s adaptive spell checker will rapidly learn to do just that. I have $800 with RIM’s name on it if they can provide me with such a device. Be nice to send an mms off in the time it takes the rest of you rather than choke out the spell checker 8 ways to Sunday and after a few revisions being able to tap that “send” button.

  • roman

LoL, leather pouch? Are they from the past?

    • QC_Al

THAT is what you have to pick on??? Lame

  • Jason

He still has to learn how to loose it to get free press, should loose 10 of them and let people try them then pass them on to another to try then tell they they get one free for giving feedback ang give a special airtime package as well.

    Now that is marketing!

    • stating the obvious

      Loose != lose

      Losse == your mother

      Lose = to misplace something

    • aliwhatsit

      Losse != Loose

Losse = a commune in the Landes department in Aquitaine in south-western France.

      Loose = your mother

  • Is This Bb10?

Probably couldn’t afford a good phone like the Nokia Lumia 920

RIP RIM!!! Even the CEO has run out of money

  • AndriodGirl

This is news now? “CEO of phone company is using company phone”

  • RatedFun

Poor guys had to slum it at a basketball game due to the NHL lockout.

  • screamer

I think it is the last chance blackberry has. Because android is big in the market and a lot choose from. Then you have apple and also Windows. They are all good os! Well apple is not hard to beat….

  • Sam

What an a$$ hole why they don’t release it to the public? He want to show people that he is special?

  • pacalis

Be a better stunt if they could take a one handed picture.

  • new_tradition

Guess I’m in the minority, but I wished the phone was bigger. I got big hands-even my 4″ Nexus S feels small sometimes :/

But I really do hope BB10 does well, and I hope people waiting for it get rewarded for their loyalty with an awesome device.

  • David

Hey! Guess what?! Yes, it is BB 10!!!

  • trytofa

The phone is way too small for people their age

  • drone.

I tried one of these the other day; pretty nice camera they have.

  • Gunnar

Does no one here know the difference between “lose” and “loose”?!

  • Michael

Thorsten sure looks like he’s enjoying the game… :D

  • Jess

    Can I have one please?

  • Al

i dont see this as a waste of time/ money, it’s a PR stun telling people BB10 is being tested and they have something more concrete than words/alpha dev to prove that point. It is being used in a real life situations and i am glad to read this article!

If the price point matches my budget(400 – 600), I can see myself giving a second chance! GO RIM GO!

  • cp

Im sure they will do ok … they will overtake WPhone but not come close to android or ios.

  • Johentie

mann people are retarded! Jan 30th 2013 is not 2016.. if people were smart they would read the interview with the COO and he mentioned when they plan to release the phone.. he said within 30 days everyone around the world should have it.. that’s before the first week of march.. not end of march! and people might get it first week of feb!

and like Thorsten is the only CEO going around enjoying himself.. and u know that he was probably invited.. cause u can’t just buy those seats! and there is a difference between INTERNAL people using it and the public! INTERNAL people are aware of the bugs and REPORT them! the public mass can’t see those bugs! you tards! that’s what BETA TESTING is for!! and it was already announced that it was being BETA TESTED IN WATERLOO A WHILE AGO!!

mann people just selectively read BS and write such invalid arguments and stupid comments..

and u think RIM is the only company that laid off people? do u even know what people got when they were laid off? what about helping people find jobs.. this was all done.. no one is on EI and going to food banks you stupid ignorant people! if you READ articles former employees mostly talk highly about RIM.

    • Johentie

people that dislike just can’t handle the truth on how pathetic they are.. /rant

and yes i use an S3 and a Blackberry .. and whoever says the S3 has good messaging abilities are living in a dream land!

no true push emails unless u have gmail?? ridiculous!

  • soSAD

  • Why

yep like i said, still looks ugly.

The design we’ve seen IS going to be the FINAL look.

  • Tom@Bell

Its hilarious how short sighted people can be. While you’re all trying to draw a connection to layoffs and their subsequent court side ventures, you all fall to realize this is free advertising. Public figures at a Lakers game? National rv? If that was not the purpose, why but a Raptors game, its closer to Waterloo.

  • m00rb

My only comment is how ridiculous it is that this little PR stutnt wasn’t a Raptors game or the CFL Eastern Final. Gotta show some Canadian love. It goes a long way, just ask Rogers and Bell, 2 companies that are astronomically richer than RIM and don’t do business anywhere else. Oh and they happen to jointly own the Raptors.

  • pats

    whats a blackberry?

  • N

Like some one bragging about his old toy

  • sp

    take my money already RIM…

    cant wait for this!!!

  • squirrel_masher

Big picture, they need to launch something Q1 that will give their die-hard North American user base something to refresh their 3 yr terms with, and give the users in the developing world who love BBM and can’t afford Apple something to upgrade to.

And getting free publicity by turning up to a NBA game, keeps the brand alive till then.
