A couple weeks ago WIND Mobile said they would be releasing the Huawei Ascend P1 sometime this summer. Well, looks like those weeks were actually a few days as the Ascend P1 is now available. This Android OS 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich powered device costs $399 outright, $199 on WIND25 Tab, or $49 on WIND40 Tab.

The Ascend P1 is probably the best high-end device that Huawei has released in Canada – WIND Mobile calls this the “perfect combination of brains and beauty.” Specs have it coming with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch super AMOLED display (960×540 resolution) and made of Gorilla Glass, 7.69 mm thin, 8MP camera that shoots 1080p videos and a 1.3MP front-facing camera. No word yet on if/when the device will be upgraded to OS 4.1 Jelly Bean.

    • Gerhardt

      is this bb10?

  • SidtheKid

That screen looks like the unmodified stock Android screen.

    • Sean

      It runs stock Android 4.0.3

    • steven schwartz

It runs a custom overlay, but you can switch it off to vanilla ICS. A feature that all android OEMs should do. If it was a little cheaper I would be all over this phone.

  • Acco

A very reasonable price point for a phone that sounds pretty decent on paper.

  • Aiden

Please to a review on it , Mobilesyrup . Thank you very much :)

  • Mel

    I’ll wait for a review..

  • ParkaPal

It’s worth noting that this phone is pentaband and will work with full 3G on any Canadian carrier unlike the majority of Wind models.

  • cheenachatze

At least on paper, it competes very favourably with the Galaxy Nexus, and costs $100 less. If the battery life is decent, this would be a very good buy.

  • Brent M

    is it stock android?

  • STY

Wow, it’s been over 30 minutes, are all the Robelus shills/employees asleep at the wheel, or getting supervisory clearance, for comments awaiting posting?

  • Kida

    According to BGR:
“The P1 ships with a near stock version of Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich. Huawei has done something no other smartphone vendor has done, however, and given users the option to switch to a skinned user interface.”

  • EddieWinslow

I like the look of that phone a lot. But also would like to see a review

  • Claudiu

Nice phone. Too bad it doesn’t have a 720p screen.

  • G

If you get this phone chances are the Chinese government is going to start monitoring you using the included camera. :)

  • Zombie Ted Rogers

Phonearena.com gave it a favorable review.

    Pros:

    Stylish, thin and light handset
    Vibrant Super AMOLED display
    Stock Android ICS by default

    Cons:

Just over 2GB of user-accessible memory
Photos often come out overexposed and with bland colors

I’m quite happy to avoid Huawei. I’ve been fooled once before.

  • mehmeh

    Please do a review!

  • Peacenik

Who in their right might would spend 400 bucks on a Huawei phone?

  • hoo dat

Huawei have some pretty sweet phones in Asia and Europe but for some reason felt the need to dump old tech only onto North America. I guess it filled a niche but it nowhere near represents what they’re all about, I guess they’re now turning a page.

  • TouchMyBox

With google selling the Galaxy Nexus which is superior to this phone for $349, I would be hoping that this lower-end phone would be $299 max.

    Oh well.

    • Theywillbepissed

Where can you get a galaxy nexus for $350?

  • optimas

Nice job WIND! This phone is pentaband so can be used in all carriers. Now I’ll be waiting for you to release the Huawei Ascend D quad (the true high end)

  • Walter

Huawei garbage again? Get some real phones.. is AWS so dead you have to get such crap. Low end phones for a low end carrier.

    • Edge

Your daily anti-Wind troll is back!

Yes, better than ever before. No life, so has lots of time to chase every Wind story on the net, and put in his negative comments.

      Go Walter go!!!

Huawei Ascend P1 hardware components are all using power-saving parts and chips, the battery life can last longer than any other smart phones in the world.

P1 will rock Canadian market, you will also see Huawei will become top3 Smart phone company in 2-3 years in the world. just wait and see.
