Sony readying international version of 4.6inch LTE-compatible Xperia GX?

Sony recently announced its summer lineup for Japanese carrier NTT Docomo and among the selections were two new Xperia devices, the GX and SX.

Both devices are intriguing in their own rights, but the GX really caught my eye. With a form factor similar to the Xperia arc, it has a 4.6-inch 720p display, 1.5Ghz dual-core processor and a 13MP Exmor R sensor, presumably a similar in quality to the 12MP sensor in the Xperia S. And the kicker? Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box.

While the launch was, and officially still is, limited to the Japanese market, the LTE-compatible device was shown off running an English version of Android 4.0.4 without Docomo branding on the hardware. Considering Sony hasn’t made any availability announcements about the LTE-powered Xperia Ion, perhaps the GX will replace it and become the company’s first North American LTE device.

The GX really takes the Xperia arc design to a new level, with a matte plastic finish that looks a bit more sturdy. We can only hope that this device, which eschews capacitive buttons in favour of the virtual ICS variety, comes to Canada eventually. Check after the break for the full demo video.
