Update: Samsung Galaxy Nexus specs revealed: LTE/HSPA, 4.65-inch curved display, 1.2GHz processor, 9mm thin

The Galaxy Nexus is apparently the go-to market name for the rumoured “Nexus Prime”, this is the “something BIG” that Samsung will be announcing on Tuesday. According to a report on BGR it’ll be another pure Google experience, exclusively available on Verizon in the United States. There’s no word on a Canadian, we know it’ll eventually be coming but don’t know when or with who. The following specs have been revealed: Android OS 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich”, 9mm thin (that’s crazy thin), a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD curved display (resolution of 1280 x 720), 1.2GHz TI OMAP 4460 dual-core Cortex A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, 5-megapixel camera that can shoot 1080p HD videos, 1.3 front-facing camera, Wi-Fi, NFC and a 1750 mAh battery… plus it’s LTE/HSPA so it’ll be very interesting to see who launches it here in Canada.

Samsung uploaded a video a couple days ago that showed a glimpse of the curved device, which also gave insight into how thin it is too. More will be revealed on Tuesday…

Update: Seems like there are a few trusted sources who are piping up about the Nexus Prime/Galaxy Nexus. The good news is that it’s coming and it’ll be announced on Tuesday. GSMArena has stepped up and debunked BGR with his “tipster from inside Google, who claims to be familiar with the next Nexus phone and he basically put the previously speculated specs to sleep”. The specs, 4.65-inch display with a resolution of 1280×720, possibly a “blazingly fast” Exynos 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8-megapixel with 1080p HD video-shooting camera, a 2050mAh, LTE-enabled and possibly a dual-mode GSM/CDMA radio… Again, Tuesday is the day – until a leaked shows up on YouTube.

  3. revealed? if its not official then its just a rumor. Google or Samsung saying something is a reveal. this is just picking up a story that another blogger heard from a trusted friend of a friend. Is is probably the same guy who swore the iPhone32 was coming out this week.

    • I agree with Rio that it’s too soon. He’s only been dead a day and even if you don’t like him he deserves a bit of respect.

That being said, how can you consider the specs on par with the iPhone4S?

The iPhone has a better camera and better dpi.

The Nexus has a larger screen, new design, better resolution, faster processor, NFC, and LTE.

The most you can say is that the phones are targeting different audiences. To say they are on par is crazy.

    • Fair enough we can say they are targeted different audiences. iPhone is more for the general population, where as something like the Nexus Prime is for techies.

Screen size is a personal preference, and you can’t really compare resolution. They will both provide the same quality because of the different screen size.

the only plus point in my opinion is NFC and the new size.
It is going to be so amazing to see & feel the 9mm.

btw Geoff, really appreciate the response, compared to the usual responses i get here.

    • @Geoff Actually the Nexus has better DPI and if the update is right, camera could very well be on par.

Basically, according that those specs are right, the Nexus beats the iPhone 4S hands down on all levels.

    • LOL

Sorry, but past 5MP it’s more about the lens and the actual sensor quality. And the higher the MP count, the better the sensor needs to be to actually maintain the same level of colour quality and low light performance. And there probably isn’t a phone on the market with a camera lens of sufficient quality to actually make use of 10MP.

Think this design, but 10MP camera’s, 1.5GHz Dual cores with high end GPU’s that make the current Samsung one look like a kids toy. All on top of a beautiful high def screen. :) Oh…wait…its the SG2HD and SG3…lol

  17. This can’t be real. Google can’t drop the ball like apple did. They need at least 1.5Ghz and an 8MP in the back. This is just a rumour. Google isn’t going to send out their top of the line phone when it isn’t competitive with all the higher end phones.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 5 Thumb down 12

    Posted by Me | October 6, 2011, 10:07 am
    • They don’t “need” at least a 1.5GHz processor or something higher than 5MP for its camera. Like so many commenters have already mentioned, it’s not the megapixels per se that determines the quality of a picture, it’s the sensor. Since so many have brought it up, I don’t have to elaborate further.

It’s almost the same deal with the processor. It all depends on who makes it and the details of the SoC itself. A 1.2GHz Exynos could dance circles around some 1.5GHz SoCs out there. And remember that Ice Cream Sandwich was developed with a TI OMAP as its primary reference, and Texas Instruments’ OMAPs are pretty darn nifty, so it wouldn’t be at all surprising that a 1.2GHz TI OMAP-powered Nexus with ICS could possibly beat out the same phone running ICS but with a 1.5GHz processor from, let’s say for argument sake, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon in a performance battle.

When it comes to tech like this, it’s really all about the details and not always about the numbers. A 1.5GHz Exynos or OMAP in the Nexus would be cool, but I’m just saying that when it comes to SoCs in the Nexus, it doesn’t “need” to have a 1.5GHz processor over a 1.2GHz, especially if Samsung puts a lot of care into the development of the phone with Google to make sure everything runs as smoothly as it could. Remember that Samsung brought the world the Galaxy S II. I’m sure they know what they’re doing with the Nexus Prime. Have a little faith.

  18. When will people realize that megapixels don’t matter? You could have a 2MP sensor, but end up with great photos if you’ve got a decent lens. 5MP will be awesome if Samsung continues to mate it with a good lens.

    • @robot-shmobot

You are absolutely right. Sad that so many people here don’t understand cameras and that MP is not a representation of image quality.

I would happily take the iPhone4 5MP camera over most of the cameras you find in Android/BB phones. If there is one thing Apple has done right with the iPhone4S, it’s the camera.

That being said, I hope this phone comes to Canada and that it can work on Wind or Mobi’s network.

    • I agree. As well, I’d take a 5mp sensor that provided good low light results, vs an 8mp sensor that was noisy in low light.

    • The sensor is everything, not the lens or the megapixel, though the lens and megapixel does add to the aesthetic touch.
You can have a 2MP camera and take great photos if the sensor in the camera is decent.
So hopefully Samsung has put a great sensor in there to go along with that 5MP camera.

  20. I think 5MP is enough for any smartphone camera. Don’t forget your 60″ HDTV is only 2MP, so you will be wasting 3MP when looking at it.

What really count is the quality of the optics at this point.

1.2GHz TI OMAP is a bit disappointing however. Should have been an Exynos or a faster OMAP.

The killer feature is the display however.

What worries me is the 4.65″ screen. It’s going to be too big to hold comfortably in one hand (I assume, since my Desire HD is already pushing it). Here’s hoping I’m wrong about this!

cool specs in some ways, but that battery life is going to suck, and that display is, quite frankly, too big. I don’t wear cargo shorts like most nerds in the world. 3.5-3.9 is plenty fine for me.

    • Hey EC, guess what? You are an i***t! The Samsung Exynos at 1.5 GHz RAAPES THE TI OMAP4460. Why? It’s because of the GPU baby. The SGX540 the TI OMAP4460 is using is the same GPU in LAST YEARS PHONES. The Samsung Exynos is using a Mali 400PM ARM GPU which is one of THE BEST SMARTPHONE GPU’s available! And now that GSMArena tackles and disproves BGR’s report, the Exynos in the Nexus Prime is apparently going to have the same GPU used in the Apple’s A5 SoC (SGX543mp2) which is number 1.

      So yeah, Exynos > OMAP4460

If tech reporters on these sites stopped posting articles about everything they see in their wet dreams as rumors and creating such high expectations for unreleased phones, people wouldn’t get as disappointed… I’ll be the first to say I want top it’s the line stuff but this phone that will be released soon had been in the works for some time yet we all expect it to have tomorrows’ tech in it… To me the obvious big step will be the HD screen which will absolutely put the retina display to shame given the current non-HD Super Amoled+ already looks way better..add HD resolution and boom… Magic, tho I also agree 4.65 is a tad big. Soon we will know for sure tho.

  58. Nothing really that special.

I’ll wait for quad core, 2gb ram, etc.

Nothing this will do what my current dual-core can’t.

The software will never catch up.

  61. I am speechless…..
I’m sure Nexus Prime won’t let me down like how iPhone 4S did.
I am so glad to see the curved screen!
I loved the screen on Nexus S.
But then I would really be happy if it comes in white on day 1… which doesn’t seem to be happening.
Other than the colour, there is nothing that makes me unhappy about this device.
Just curious though on how well the non physical keys will work.
And what are those three circles on the side??

  62. poor iphone users. trying any attempt they can to validate their overpriced, sub par garbage. it is a flawed system that is just Chic, and sexy, and that sells more than internal specs unfortunately. if and when things go wrong with your iphone you have to bring it in to apple just to not void your warrenty, your music has to be put on through itunes which is the most unnecessary program ever, and all it does is create another barrier to get your illegaly obtained music on to your device. and lastly, the “upgrades” apple makes with their products is dispicable. the progression the iphone has made when it first came out, compared to just about any other phone company is astonishingly low. for example, iphone 4 to 4s. even the 3s to 4. they are very small upgrades that apple yuppies are going to waste their money on because it is shaped a little different so you can buy a new case, or use an extreme amount of data to text message someone. apple is the biggest sham of deceit since the catholic church. i am impressed, and disgusted all at the same time.
