The Rogers HTC Magic was one of the first Android-powered devices to come to Canada and has had a fair share of troubles. It was briefly pulled off the shelves for an urgent 911 fix and then renamed the Magic+. Now there’s some good news for owners as an upgrade to 2.1 is in the works.
On Twitter, RogersMary stated that “Okay Magic fans, I have an update for you! Rogers has received a draft OS 2.1 Magic upgrade from HTC”. But this does not mean that it’s coming soon… We’re in process of testing. No solid release date as that depends on Google’s approval as well. We anticipate end of Aug but plz stay tuned”.
Progress… but by the time this gets officially released so will OS 2.2.
By that time CyanogenMod-6 (Android 2.2) will be available for the HTC Magic … among other Android devices (HTC Dream, Motorola Droid/Milestone, Google Nexus One …).
How is that possible that a couple of “hackers” manage to build a legal Android distribution that’s going to run on many devices before HTC & Rogers manage to get this update available to their customers?
CyanogenMod-5 (Android 2.1) works perfectly on my Magic and it’s available since June 19th.

Because ‘hackers’ don’t have to have their ROM certified by Google, tested by HTC for extended time, tested by the carriers for extended time. It’s not like HTC can just make the ROM, install it on a Magic, it works, and ask Rogers to release it to their customers the next day!
Also I can’t believe that there are people who are naïve enough to think that community based ROM’s should be released by HTC and Rogers as official. They are GREAT ROM’s but often contain third-party apps and add-ons that are in gray areas, and are not tested either. I know people have been frustrated with the time it has taken to get 2.1, but this is nothing new, or unsurprising – look how long it took Google to release the official FR91 build of 2.2 after the IO announcement

I’ll believe it when I see it. After installing the HTC 911 fix to my Rogers Dream. It will forever be stuck at Android 1.5 and cannot be rooted. Its an awesome phone that both Rogers and HTC crippled. It was given to me, unlike a lot of people who signed contract to get this phone. To be forced to take on a new 3 year contract to get the Magic+. Again I’ll believe it when pigs fly or hell freezes over.

@jnrbshp
how is it not legal? Android is entirely open source. Steve Kondik(cyanogen) goes to AOSP website(http://source.android.com/), downloads the source code, and compiles it from scratch. Such is the beauty of open source software.
