TELUS to launch Palm Pre and Pixi in January
The second coming of Palm is in full force as they have just launched the Pre in the U.K, Germany and Spain. Here in Canada, even though Bell just dropped the price of the Pre down another $50 we understand that sales are strong. Could there be reasoning behind the price drop though, other than their HSPA network? We think so…
Back in July we wrote a story about how the Palm Pre was only exclusively available to Bell for 6 months. We had a document called Bell Strategy that said: “The Palm Pre will expand and strengthen Bell’s smartphone category and will break new ground in the fiercely competitive smartphone market. Bell will be the second carrier worldwide (after Sprint) to sell the Palm Pre, with exclusivity for 6 months. Bell anticipates the Canadian market will strongly embrace this product with strong interest, which will boost overall smartphone sales.”
The Canadian market did embrace the Pre and the 6 months is coming to an end. Although we’ve said it before, we are now hearing that TELUS, the only carrier to have 3 networks (CDMA, MiKE, HSPA) will officially be bringing on both the Palm Pre (HSPA) and the new Palm Pixi in January. No word on pricing or exact January launch dates yet, we’ll find out more when we get closer to the date.

So does this mean a more widespread availability of a GSM (HSPA) Palm Pre? I understand it’s already available in Europe but so far in North America the Pre is CDMA only.

Awesome, now I’m torn between the HTC Hero, Moto Milestone, and now the PRE!!! What do you guys think. Which one is better?

I am wondering the same thing myself! A month ago I was bitching about how the Telus line-up sucked. Now I am dying with choices. The wait hurts though.

Tell me about it. Before the HSPA launch, even Bell had a better lineup and Telus was a silent giant. Now I see why they were a silent giant. They are coming out with amazing devices faster than anyone in the market. Not even Rogers with their GSM devices can come up with cool devices.

So Telus will have Touch Pro2, Hero, iPhone 3GS, Milestone, Pre, Pixi, BL40, Storm2…
I’m happy to be on Telus right now, but I still hate them for crappy HSPA data plans… $30 for 1GB is just ridiculous!

I’m just hoping that they will come up with better plans and get more competitive once DAVE and Public launches. They are competitive in the market compared to Rogers and Bell with no SAF/911 or GRR fees.

So much for rumours… anyone actually have some evidence if the PRE Plus will make it’s way to Canada? At this point I don’t really care which carrier.
