Rogers Communications and Ericsson recently announced their participation in the City of Ottawa’s Innovation Pilot Program.
The Innovation Pilot Program launched in Ottawa to attract innovative startups developing new technologies, products or services. Currently, several startups have joined the program including Key2Access, Gamifi, SavvyDox and others.
Rogers and Ericsson together will pursue a “connected water” solution under the program, which will include a combination of IoT, mobile and broadband technologies. The goal of the project is to collect real-time data that city staff can use to predict and prevent issues related to water quality.
The City of Ottawa’s annual water monitoring program already includes over 80 thousand annual quality tests for rivers and streams spanning up to 4,500 km. Areas outside the city, including Rideau Valley, South Nation and Mississippi Valley Conservation Authorities, are also participating in the pilot test.
“Having the ability to conduct real-time monitoring of key water quality indicators has the potential to advance the way we manage this natural resource” said Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson. “We’re thrilled to participate in this pilot with Ericsson and Rogers, and are hopeful the results will validate how Internet of Things technology can reinforce our current municipal water testing processes.”
The City will use sensors to gather information in real time about water quality issues, and will then report back to Rogers and Ericsson about the success of the connected water service.
