2020 Tokyo Olympic gold medals could be forged from recycled smartphones

With the Rio Olympics games and its green, allege infested swimming pools quickly becoming a memory, it looks like Japan could utilize its 2020 Olympics to make a statement about sustainability.

According to a report form popular Japanese publication Nikkei, 2020 Olympic organizers are considering using recycled electronics to forge the next summer games’ Olympic gold, silver and bronze medals.

Japanese organizers feel that rather than requesting mining corporations donate the metals to Tokyo’s Olympics, the country likely has enough gold, silver and copper present in its discarded electronic waste to build the medals.

Most of the electronic material already recycled in Japan is currently used to create more electronics, which could spell bad news for this Olympic medal plan.

The Olympic planning committee is currently requesting companies pitch it new ideas for a Olympic-focused electronic recycling program.
