iPhone 6s camera performance falls behind Android peers

iPhone 6

Photography-focused website DxOMark recently put the iPhone 6s through its rigorous testing process, and the result should not be surprising to anyone that is even acutely aware of Apple’s upgrade process. The camera on iPhone 6s performs about the same as its predecessor.

On the positive side, the website notes the new iPhone takes properly exposed shots much of the time, and that it features fast and accurate auto-focus, as well as reliable white balance.

Less positively, DxOMark says noise can be an issue, especially in shots that were taken in less than ideal lighting conditions (this is likely the result of the fact that Apple decided to use a sensor with more pixels). Moreover, the website goes on to note that artifacts can creep into some shots.

The result is a camera that’s no longer the best on a smartphone — that distinction goes to the Sony Xperia Z5, a device we’re still waiting patiently for in Canada. It’s also behind what’s available on many other Android phones, including the yet-to-be-released Nexus 6P and the excellent shooter that’s on the Galaxy S6. That said, it’s still a good camera overall.

If you’re curious how DxOMark arrives at its rankings, then check out this article, which details how they go about their testing. The article was published in 2012 — so they’ve likely made some changes to their testing procedures over the intervening years — but it remains a fascinating insight into the work that goes into ranking these phones.
