BlackBerry now has over 1.1 million BBM Channels, introduces the BBM advertising platform

BlackBerry recently unveiled several new features that makes its popular messaging service a source of additional revenue, including BBM Meetings and the ability to retract and add timers to messages.

According to Matthew Talbot, SVP of Emerging Solutions at BlackBerry, the company now has over 1.1 million BBM Channels in its portfolio and is ripe for advertisers to leverage those Channels to connect with customers.

BlackBerry says it is “uniquely positioned to capitalize on a mobile messaging market” and has entered into several agreements to bring advertising and various promotions into your BBM feed, specifically in the form of sponsored posts, sponsored invites, sponsored sticker packs, and featured placements.

BlackBerry also noted that while it is seeking advertising from major brands, it cares about its users security and personal information and “at no time is personally identifiable information about any BBM user viewable by channel owners or advertisers.”

BBM currently has over 91 million users and is available on BlackBerry, iOS, Android and Windows Phone.
