TELUS has updated their device upgrade schedule once again shows a few updates coming to Windows Phone 8 users.

The Nokia Lumia 520, 620 and 1020 are all on tap to receive the GDR3 (General Distribution Release 3) upgrade sometime in January 2014 – Nokia has also named this update as ‘Lumia Black’ and will include some Nokia specific enhancements. No other details are listed and TELUS notes these are “estimates and are subject to change.”

Here’s a list of some of the changes you can expect:

  • Accessibility. We’ve made several improvements for customers who are visually impaired.
  • Storage. Now you can easily free up storage space on your phone and manage temporary files. New categories show what’s taking up space.
  • Driving Mode. Feeling distracted behind the wheel? Driving Mode allows you to minimize incoming calls and text messages to help you focus on the road.
  • Screen. Reading emails in bed? You can lock your screen orientation so it doesn’t shift when you move your phone around.
  • Wi-Fi. Start preserving cellular data on your phone right out of the box—you can now connect to Wi-Fi during set up.
  • Internet sharing. Now you can use your phone’s cellular data connection from your Microsoft Windows 8.1 devices by pairing them over Bluetooth.
  • Bluetooth. Several fixes were made to address known issues, and improvements were made to connection quality for Bluetooth accessories.
  • Ringtones. Do more with ringtones now. Assign ringtones for text messages, so you’ll know who’s texting you without even looking. Use your custom ringtones for more things—text messages, instant messages, emails, voicemail, and reminders.
  • App switcher. Don’t look back. Now you can use the App switcher to quickly close apps when you’re finished with them.
  • Other improvements. Includes many other improvements to Windows Phone.

If I got a Rogers Lumia for my dad, then hooked it up to Petro Canada Mobility pay as you go, will it still get the update when Rogers pushes it without the Rogers SIM card in it?

    • MXH070

Probably not. Just pop a Rodgers sim in it when the update rolls out as I’m guessing your are getting it unlocked.

    • Sequoia46.2

No, it’s locked to Rogers but will still work on Petro Canada because they use Rogers towers.

    • MXH070

I would assume since it’s on a Rodgers network it should get the update. But we all know the big three don’t work on common sense.

AFAIK a Rogers-locked phone will work with Petro Canada SIMs without unlocking. The release of the update has no bearing on the SIM card used; once it is approved (by Nokia and/or Rogers) it will be available for your device even if you are on another network.

Thank you! The other guy didn’t know what he was talking about.

There’s a GDR3 developer edition you can download. It has been out for a bit now.

Dose this fix the active sync issue?

    • J-Ro

Their solution my IT department isn’t ok with. I was troubleshooting for a co-working but it lead him to having to get a new phone.

I wonder why the 625 was left off the list?

BTW – The 620 is going to be $80 OUTRIGHT from Future Shop and Best Buy, Online Only, on Cyber Monday.

Does anyone know if TELUS is going to release GDR3 (Update 3) for the ATIV S?
