Rogers decides to release the BlackBerry Z30!

Ian Hardy

October 9, 2013 6:16pm

Wow. Looks like all the backlash has paid off!

After stating that they “think the 3 BlackBerry devices we carry meet our customers’ needs,” Rogers has heard the call and ‘In response to customers’ feedback and excitement,’ will indeed release the BlackBerry Z30:

“We have a longstanding partnership with Blackberry and continue to be big supporters of the company and their products. Rogers will be making the device available online, through our national reservation system and directly to our business to business customers. We’re pleased to add the new Z30 to our roster of Blackberry smartphones, which includes the Z10, Q10 and Q5.”

No specific word on pricing or availability. Most likely on October 15th like Bell, TELUS and MTS for $700, but as stated above it’ll only be available online.

In the meantime, make sure you have a read of our Z30 hands-on here.

Solid Canadian pride!

  • FunkyMonkey

    Peer Pressure.

    • Plazmic Flame

      That sucks, lol.

I really hope they stick the numbers out there in the public.

      So I expect to see:

“We had an outcry from the public of 15,000 people through social media, etc.

In the past 3 months we have sold 750….”

It will be something like this, trust me. If anything, Rogers won’t be stocking them in stores, online-direct sales only. Can’t see them buying too many to sit around and collect dust.

    • Eduardo

Yeah, I’d like to see those numbers too; how many people complained just for the sake of complaining and how many actually wanted to buy the damn thing. I have nothing against it but I don’t think there was anything wrong with Rogers deciding not to carry it.

      Btw, where’s BBM4ALLbutwindows?

    • Plazmic Flame

Yeah, it’s crazy. I’m very confident that the majority of people who complained aren’t even Rogers customers and I’ll even bet that a lot of them don’t even live in Canada!

As for #BBM4ALLbutWindows…. that’s hilarious! lol
I do think BBM should be on all platforms, they should be trying to completely takeover the instant messaging game.

    • Balls O’Steele

Rogers is an unreliable network and I would never get a z30 or anything else on it. Imagine if you had to dial 911 during the recent outage! People’s lives are at risk thanks to rogers incompetence.

    • Kahn

You literally never say anything worth more than a fly’s fart. Ever.

    • johentie

people like u made it break! and honestly WP is nice and all but i have NEVER seen one in public.. and i ride the TTC everyday! and when it does come out.. i bet u’ll download it!

    • Eduardo

How is it that “people like me made it break”? (nice grammar btw)
I didn’t say anything wrong about BB, I’m questioning how many of those complaining will actually buy it, which is a fair question. As for bbm, I’m done with their broken promises. I’m not even gonna get into a OS discussion with you

    • Kaostheory

Any good company supports the community they originate from, even if it’s a loss. Some have even been known to give to the community without anything in return.

    • Plazmic Flame

That ideology doesn’t work too well in the business world…

    • Nick

Peer pressure from 8% market share. What a joke…

  • Suleman Khan

    • johentie

      Chargers YAWNNNNNNNNNN

  • Acer12345

Please tell me again that there’s zero demand.

    • Rich

      there’s zero demand

    • JB

      Rich you poor ignorant fool.

    • kroms

NEVER seen a BB Z10 in public. Can’t imaging seeing a Z30 any more then that.

Z10 Z30 Over PRICED smartphones that no one but the small % of Die Hard BB fans will buy for $700.

Nexus 5 in a week or so will be out and THAT is where it is AT !

    • Kahn

You’ve never seen a Z10 in public? You either never go out or walk around with your eyes closed.

  • JB

    Wheres Nicolas….fired.

    • Dimitri

You know whats funny tho? Rogers will ONLY listen if people react like this. It seems it always works.

  • Ryan Laker

How many of the people whining are going to actually go buy one now? Any bets?

    • Dimitri

I know i will be buying 2 of them Outright. I know actually a few people that want it and are with Rogers. I am sure others will as well.

    • JB

      Me too dimitri.

Just made my whole corp. Switch to bb10.

Z30 for all the managers baby!!

      Go canada co!

    • iPlunks

      I bet you did

    • kroms

You guys make me laff. !!

      Z30 !!!! YA BABY !!

Tell you what. I’ll get 2 Nexus 5’s and still be FARTHER ahead then getting 1 Z30 . How’s that .

    • JB

      Cool story bro…

    • Toastycakes

I am pretty sure they did that to shut you up about the blackberry.

    • thisiscjay

I have my $ set aside.

    • Stephen_81

I’ll be purchasing one now, AND this has effectively halted my exodus from Rogers services. I was moving all the households fore which I do the tech handling from Rogers Internet to Teksavvy and Rogers Cable to Netflix and 1 Bell Sat. in addition to moving phone lines.

I’ve supported Rogers because they always offered me the devices I wanted and supported small/medium Canadian businesses. Them changing their mind on this due to the vocal people wanting it makes me willing to stick with their services. AND I’ll be buying at least 1 Z30

    • JB

      Riight on stephen!!

      Go Stephen Go!

    • Canucks

It will be lucky if they push out a thousand to regular customers. I hope they sell though since BB is a Canadian company.

    • kroms

Never gonna happen. You have to try REALLY HARD to ever seen one in PUBLIC ! Even then , it doesnt take a ROCKET Degree to figure out that BB is NOT SELLING !!!!
      No one wants these phones.

    • deltatux

Really? I see at least 3 Z10s on a daily basis on the bus… They’re not that hard to find, I can see them in a lot of workplaces and schools too.

Sure, they’re eclipsed by Android devices and iPhones but they’re not hard to find.

    • thisiscjay

Shhh he said “rocket degree”… leave the genius alone lol

    • kroms

NONE. Go on CrackBerry Forums if you want to hear the BS of people saying ” Oh man I got a Q10 , Z10 , and Now I’ll buy a Z30 and maybe 2 more because BB is the best ”

LMAO what a bunch of kids. You just know they are BS but hey, !

    • thisiscjay

I’ll give you an award for your bright comments. Right next to your “rocket degree” smh

    • Topman

I don’t doubt you’re wrong, but I had a right to complain and will be one of those that will probably stick with Rogers after they changed their mind instead of moving to Bell. 10 year customer, two months til upgrade, Blackberry since 2007… Yeah. You get the picture.

I’m happy they reversed the situation and amazed at the power of social media, from toppling governments to getting the phones you want on the network you’re with lol

  • pwnasaurus11

Well I guess all four of those whiners will be happy now.

    • skullan

And over a million Blackberry haters will continue to whine, stomp their feet and puff out their chest at the fact that they can’t gloat on a company’s downfall.

    • thisiscjay

    • kroms

  • Surveillance

Man I’m gonna dial up one of these babies on Rogers new $55 smart pick plan! In all honestly the Z30 is a nice device. Anyone else call it the Zee30 or am I the only one not calling it the Zed30?

    • InsaneWoodGrain

      Enjoy the 500mb a month…

    • ryeyeyeyey

too bad the Z30 isnt eligible for that plan….

  • jgerb0

All this fuss for selling a couple BB Z30’s. What a wasted effort

    • jgerb0

      Don’t hate me because it’s true! 😀

    • thisiscjay

A “couple” = 2. So technically your “truth” was a graceful failure I guess?

    • jgerb0

If you warrant 2 phones as a success then you’re right!

  • Steve

Canadian pride…sure. Dumb business move…for sure!

    • Stephen_81

Why a dumb business move? Basically they don’t need to hold any large inventory because it is website only and national supply agreements with businesses.

It is actually a VERY smart business move because they get their margin dollars without putting out as much capital
More carriers should move to this model, it actually it the best chance for us to see lower prices in the future

    • Sweet

The only problem I have with it is that you can’t try the phone before buying. So far, every phone I bought, I bought after trying it out myself. I don’t see myself buying a phone without trying it out first. But for Rogers, I agree, it’s the best move.

    • Stephen_81

I agree. lucky many can go play with one at Bell or Telus before ordering it from Rogers online if they want to try.

But really the number of people who buy devices never having touched them before hand, same with computers and all those things we buy online we are moving to a more online only market.

    • thisiscjay

I believe Rogers, as with most carriers, allow a 14 day grace period that you may return your device within.

    • Brad Jones

Carrying a phone is about more than merely buying inventory. They have to test the phone, support it, manage supply, even putting up webpages and graphics takes time (which is money). I don’t know how much it costs Rogers to add the Z30, but I hope all the complainers actually buy the phone they claim to need so badly. After buying into a dying platform (webOS…may she rest in peace) I wouldn’t recommend buying Blackberry to anyone.

    • Stephen_81

They’ve already done all the hardware support, the Enterprise reps were talking about it and then back peddling once the announcement came,
The only thing they need to approve is OS10.2 still which they are also doing for the Z10, Q10, Q5.
The costs of device support are handled by the expensive packages we already buy and should they need to they could be negotiating direct BlackBerry support as enterprise users do.

though I agree the costs are more than just the devices. but thankfully you’re not the one in charge as I recommend BlackBerry to many users who are still communication focused

    • Brad Jones

Stephen_81, thank you for such an even-handed and calm response. It is refreshing to have courteous discussion online. I do wish Blackberry the best; Canada needs more tech companies.
Sadly I think it is far too late. Maybe if Blackberry had bought webOS instead of HP, or made customized secure Windows Phones it might have turned out different.

  • JJohn

Interesting turn of events, looks like it won’t be available in store though..

  • rd0t

What’d I tell you guys? See my previous post 🙂

  • Francois Roy

    Rubbing my eyes in disbelief

  • rd0t

And for all of you still hating on BlackBerry.. just pick up the damn phone and use it for more than 5 minutes before you continue to hate for no reason. Ive had a Z30 for a week now and next to the HTC One, and the iPhone 5S, it’s the best build device ive EVER held. 10.2 has fixed a lot of bugs and now BB10 feels buttery smooth in almost every aspect. A lot of key apps are coming out, and with the recent announcement of third party Instagram, Snapchat, and Vine apps coming out, the platform will be up there with Android and iOS. This is definitely the best device BlackBerry has ever released!

    • Word

      Not a hard accomplishment…

    • JB

I have used the z30 a bit too….it is exceptional. anyone here bashing bb10 is just brand bashing cause it isnt their “team”.

Me I cheer for team canada, that includes blackberry and the people who go to work everyday in waterloo and make this beautiful device!!

    • kroms

I don’t hate the Z30 for anything you claim.
I hate it because it is OVER Priced and offers me nothing more then I get on a NEXUS 4 or soon to be released NEXUS 5.

Why should i pay $700 for a smartphone when i can get a NEXUS 5 for far less and with better specs , better echo system, All the Apps I enjoy, etc etc etc….. for much less money ?
Team Canada ? LOL you do that. Keep telling your self that. That’s right . BB cares for Canadians !! you GO on thinking that.

I’ll keep cheering for my Wallet !

      Z30 -No thanks.

    • thisiscjay

Your judgement seems clouded by the Nexus ‘at cost’ pricing. I’m going to assume if the wildly “underpriced” Nexus line didn’t exist you would be impartial?…. Didn’t think so.

    • rd0t

      What thisiscjay said.

Google Nexus pricing cant be applied to devices like the Z30, S4, and HTC One etc. They’re flagship phones that are meant to be released for purchase on carriers only. Everyone knows Google eats up a lot of the cost of the Nexus devices which allows them to price it attractively. Unfortunately a lot of OEM’s like BlackBerry dont have the luxury to do that. Sure, the Nexus devices offer great value and I agree, they’re one of the best bang for buck smartphones you can buy but that doesnt mean the Z30 isn’t a good option for a lot of people out there based on THEIR needs.

  • E

Rogers launches the Z30 and network fails in Toronto & Montreal.

  • Skbwolf

Boy the BlackBerry trolls sure seem hurt by this decision lol

    • JB

Well nicolas got fired. So he has more time to tell us about how much bb10 doesnt sell or whatever the hell he was saying.

  • Ronell  I.T. Man

It’s online available online and to business customers. So it’s not a bad move. It’s not like Rogers bought a million devices.

    Read the article

      I agree…at least they’ll offer it

  • Sweet

That’s what happens when you vote, or threaten to vote, with your wallet, instead of crying to the government to do something about it. Good on the BB fans for effecting change. Now let’s hope they live up to their promises and buy the devices.

    • JB

A Lot of the people complaining were BlackBerry fans for sure, but also many were just fed up canadians…fed up with rogers BS.

Way to go everyone who spoke up!.

      Today is your day!

    • bigshynepo

With 2 new Q10s in my family, I can’t justify the Z30 but the reviews are great and people need to try out OS 10.2 and see how nice it is to use.

      Public Opinion MATTERS…

  • ineptone

I have lost what little respect I had for Rogers – which was entirely related to their decision to not sell the Z30 – because of their cowardly back pedalling. It’s great they listened to customer opinion, but it would have been much more commendable if it pertained to something that actually mattered.

      Me too!

  • mad

    Flip Floppers

  • Raj Singh

I’m happy with that decision. I have to upgrade my business device. I can choose iPhone 4S, iPhone5, Q10 or Z10. I hope I’ll get the option to upgrade to the Z30 now. I bought a Z10 earlier this year for myself. I have an iPhone4S that I never use. I’m using the Xperia Z Ultra LTE for my personal device, which I love. I’d like the Q10 or the Z30 for work.

I would want to buy it too!

  • RobbersWireless

Rogers and Microsoft need to grow some balls.

  • jonnny

i would really like to try the z30 out, but if the nexus 5 has a 300mah battery with the 32gig for around 400, then i cant really justify spending hundreds more to try bb10

    • JB

The z30 batt life is the best on the market. Period.

    • kroms

LMAO. Z30 is the BEST OF ALL!!!

      What a tool.

The Device was outdated before it was released.
The Nexus 5 will make the Z30 look like a toy. for LESS $

    • JB

Nexus 5 looks like a nice device….But im supporting BlackBerry. its from here, it employs here… do what you gotta do, ill do what I gotta do.

The z30 batt life is exceptional tho. No debate there.

    • 01011001001

What’s employment got to do with you buying a z30? unless you and at least 100k people buy a blackberry devices on a daily basis you will not reverse its fortunes.

    • jonnny

    • JB

Hahah ya 300 mah….would be a tad dissappoiting eh haha.

The price will likely drop to like $500 or $600 soon enough!

    • kroms

      EXACTLY !

  • Pull the Plug

Delaying the end. And I’m not talking about Rogers, but those who refuse to migrate. It’s like ignoring a loved one’s do-not-resuscitate request.

  • Mindmeld

I still hate Rogers. It’s trying to kill indie ISPs.

  • graze81

So based on the amount of feedback Rogers got, we should expect iPhone opening weekend sale numbers. Next quarter, again based on feedback, BlackBerry shouldn’t lose money on the Z30. People got what they wanted, now buy it and show us how badly you really wanted it.

  • TK

Funniest part is all the people bitching about this would probably never buy it to begin with…I think Patriotism is cool and all but you should be able to back it up with quality and value and this phone and blackberry as a whole does not match that criteria. The day they do…kudos to them, but not today.

Well, I don’t think so and I’m pretty sure the other thousands who messaged Rogers will actually buy the phones. They are pretty good phones!

  • Poobah

get ready for excess inventory rogers lolololol

Getting ready? They haven’t even released it. You need to give them some time. GO BLACKBERRY GO!

  • Ren596

I hope it is ava. Fido customers as well

I hope for it to be available to everyone! 🙂

  • southerndinner

Great news, now they can have them and not sell it just like everyone else!

That’s just plain ignorance. You NEVER know what will happen!

    • southerndinner

Actually in this case I do

No, you don’t. The Q5 is selling amazingly on the Rogers network.

  • Corey Anderson

I have the Z10. For you people that have not seen one in public open your eyes. All smart phones look the smart from a distance. First when I got the Z10 eight months ago my friend though it was s4 with the case I have on it. Put case on phone you do not know what people are using..

    • BMSMA

I ride a very crowded train every morning and afternoon, the only BB’s I still really see are the older Bold and Curves and a few Torches, I have seen some Z10’s here and there but not in the numbers that it’s noticeable.

Me too, I don’t see a lot of them either..

  • Cormang

So, I wonder if BlackBerry gave them a deal. There’s no way I’d be buying more BlacKberry devices when I had a warehouse already full of them…

  • tehbigone

Pretty unusual for them to go out of their way to not sell it anyway

    • 01011001001

well likely Rogers has the option to return unsold inventory and no upfront payments on any of the z30s being shipped to them. Rogers is a business after all.

  • 01011001001

    these people have no backbone.

  • fruvous

Rogers giving the FU to consumers again. You want the two year contracts? OK, we’ll just raise your rates by 50%. Want us to carry the Z30? OK, we’ll drop the Q10 and Z10.

    • Ren596

So Far Droped Q10 & Z10 Have Only BEEN for Fido PULLED From Their Website The DAY of the Voice Network Outage

I guess they did that on purpose so they can’t get people to notice. Plus, people are worried about their coverage.

    • Ren596

That Might be true BUT what Also comes to mind is that ONLY The Q5 is selling well for Rogers What Are Telus & Bell Doing That Rogers is not ?

    • Ren596

That Might be true BUT what Also comes to mind is that ONLY The Q5 is selling well for Rogers What Are Telus & Bell Doing That Rogers is not ?

I’m not sure, but Rogers must be doing something different.

F***k Rogers. I actually said that in one of my comments regarding Rogers not carrying the BlackBerry Z30.

  • gommer strike

And here’s the true test. I expect to see all, but *not limited* to the following:

    – pre-orders and sales rivaling that of any smartphone release
    – the top trends on twitter #saveblackberry, #Z30, #BUYZ30SAVEBLACKBERRY
    – headlines blaring “SOLD OUT!” of the Z30, and “Blackberry’s back!”
    – Heins toasting his fans on stage
    – Kickstarter raising 10 mil with user requests to go with that

Make it happen Blackberry fans. Tell me you hate iPhone. Tell me you hate Android. Tell you hate Windows phone. But don’t tell me you can’t put together $700 bucks for the Z30.

      I agree!

  • Matt

Now what would be pretty darn funny after all of this is if they didn’t sell any.

No It wouldn’t…It would be a great shame to Canadians…

  • ian ian

I’m more into the blackberry enterprise side of things and i’ve been a long time supporter of blackberry but I think i’ll just wait for the S5 to come out…

Nah, I would buy it NOW. #SaveBlackBerry

  • Nadefrenzy

Using a Z30 temporarily, and it’s actually pretty slick. My first BB10 phone, and i’m liking all the swipe stuff thus far. We’ll see in the coming days how it goes.

      Cool, eh?

    • Nadefrenzy

Yea it’s awesome. Only issues I have are that I wish they’d offer a seperate email application (sometimes when u swipe to access the hub, the previous email window is still open there instead—i’d like to have access to the hub at all times directly).

Also, 720p/1080p video playback stutters at times in desktop mode unfortunately.

However, besides that, I’m really liking the phone.

I’m pretty sure they’ll fix that in the next OS update.
      It’s probably a bug…

    • Nadefrenzy

The email thing is a native issue. Video playback might be a bug i’m not sure.

      That’s what I meant!

    • Nadefrenzy

It’s at 10.2 though already. But hey fingers crossed.

    I know, those bastards!

    I think it’s awesome too. High-five!
