BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981 now available in Canada

If you have an extra $1,899 to spend and want a premium BlackBerry device, then the Porsche Design P’9981 is perfect for you. This exclusive Berry was officially unveiled by RIM last October, but wasn’t available to purchase in Canada. Well, today Porsche Design opened up a boutique store in fancy Yorkville neighbourhood in Toronto and put this “must-have partner for design-minded people” available for sale. The specs of the P’9981 are still the same: 2.8-inch touchscreen display, runs OS 7.1 and will not be upgraded to BB10, 1GHz processor, 5MP camera that records 720p HD videos, custom Porsche fonts and redesigned icons with a full QWERTY keyboard, brushed stainless steel case with a leather backing, Wi-Fi and NFC.

We’ll have a hands-on shortly… in the meantime, who’s buying?

      Nokia sold Vertu due to image reasons (can’t have an uber exlusive store when you are firing 10,000 people!)

      RIM is at $10.20, about to fire 2,000- 6,000 people just fired the independent director of the board and replaced it with a banker, and now makes a Porsche edition??

      June 28, earnings report is coming…they will need a porsche to run away from the press.
      I wonder if this time the press will ask them for a firm date to BB10.

It’s irritating, and sad, and quite frankly, if this is what you spend your afternoons doing, then you not only need to return to adult education, but enroll in support classes for the mentally challenged.

    It’s a good idea, I think this $2,000 phone that cost who knows how much to design, build and market will be the perfect solution to RIM’s financial troubles.

      BB, this isn’t a computer. It’s a phone. A shitty phone with no apparent upgrade path. Today’s top of the line Android phones and iPhones are selling for $600. A year from now, those phones will have seen at least one major OS update. This won’t.

      Not to mention the fact that Apple (as much as I dislike them) have a reputation for building sleek, high-quality products that would appeal to exactly the type of person that would want this special edition, expensive phone. RIM doesn’t. Porsche made a huge mistake here, as did RIM in actually putting out this product.

    This is Sad. This Tid bit of information has maybe 130 words in it. And it tell us that this blackberry device WONT be upgradable to BB10 as well as This device being already released back in October, which implies that it is outdated and certainly isn’t a BB10 device. Do you kids even bother reading more than the title of this so called article? i weep for the future. Just plain Sad.

    On topic, the phone is out of date now. Great for the person who wants to show that they have money but have no idea on how to spend it properly. Why don’t you go buy a diamond studded Dodge Neon at the same time.

    All this “BB10″ talk is rather myopic.

    Not everyone needs to have the latest OS just because it’s the latest.

    The 30-40 something crowd who pimp nice cars, women and entertainment typically don’t give a F*** about “OS10″. They just want something prestige to get their message across… which is exactly what this device does.

BB still has its own beneifts, but what you are seeing and hearing are people simply stating “you get more for your money” if you go iOS or Android or WP7/8. Isn’t that what all consumer products are about? getting the most out of what you pay?

      Yes, and in this case, people are getting the best value in two areas: Hardware engineering and prestige. Software isn’t everything to everyone.

      But for this phone.. we are not the target market. Porsche Designs does not care about us. We do not matter to them. They know we are never going to give them money, so they design stuff for those that will give them money.

      The fact that they are expanding the areas where this phone is available tells me that it has seen success with it’s target market and is worth expanding slightly.

    Got one for myself to match my GT3, one for my brother for his GT2. Who cares about the phone – it’s a Porsche brotherhood. Hell, a bicycle can get you from A to B, a cardboard box can be effective shelter and plastic bags carry everything you need. You buy the upper level things because you can afford it.

    Most of the people on here seem irrational. The people who can afford to go drop $2,000 on a phone don’t give a s**t about the specs, or it non being updated to BB10, that’s not why they’re buying it. They’re buying it to show those around them that they have money, plain and simply.

    Anyone on here bitching about it being shitty spec’d, or not being updated, clearly don’t get “it”. This is fine, as they aren’t the target demographic anyways. Those who are, typically aren’t on MS.

    Oh, and as an aside, f**k some of you need to learn to spell and use punctuation. Reading some of these comments is simply frustrating.

    I dont think people are really getting it… Porsche spent the money to have this phone built… it wasn’t mean for a mainstream release… Porsche is selling it at their boutique in Yorkville.. not RIM… Dont jump on the hate rim bandwagon over this… This is Porsche saying, We’ll try to sell some to the people who live in Yorkville because it has our name on it and they have more money then they know what to do with….
