Samsung confirms Galaxy S III will be unveiled “in the first half of the year”

Samsung has confirmed that the follow-up device to the very popular Galaxy S II will not be unveiled at the upcoming Mobile World Congress. A report in Tech Radar states that “Samsung is looking forward to introducing and demonstrating exciting new mobile products at Mobile World Congress 2012. The successor to the Galaxy S2 smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product. Samsung stays committed to providing the best possible mobile experiences for customers around the world.”

Disappointing? Certainly. We all wanted to see that powerhouse device, which is rumoured to come with Android OS 4.0, quad-core processor and a Super AMOLED HD display, but Samsung noted that there’ll be a “separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year”… so something bigger is at play here. In the meantime we’ll have to see what’s planned for MWC and what these “exciting new mobile products” are – probably a new sized Galaxy Tab.

  1. I really hope they stop growing in size. Am I the only one that finds the S2 to be somewhat difficult to hold and use with 1 hand?

A 4.2-4.3″ SAMOLED+ 720p screen with ICS would be amazing.

    • WELL 5.3″ SCREEN IS PERFECT FOR BROWSING AND TEXTING WATCHING YOUTUBE AND VIDEO AND ITS BIG BUT YOU CAN HANDEL IT, FOR PHONE CALLS 4.5″ IS THE MINIMUM I CAN GO FOR

4.3″ ITS NOT TO BAD BUT FOR ME IS SMALL
3.5″ AND LESS IS A WAY TOOOOO SMALL, ITS DESIGNED FOR TEENS AND LONG NAILS GIRLS!!

  3. I’m hoping quad core chips will be the start of more ‘future friendly’ phones where you’re not completely out of date within the first year, or two, of a three year contract.

  4. I think that one of the biggest things that Samsung needs to do, is clean up their model identification!! There are several “galaxy s2″ versions out there now! I hope that Samsung will have just ONE galaxy s3, and NOT a different version for each country!

  5. @Dono- No you aren’t the only one, but you are in the minority so you don’t matter. 4.45 is a good size if they make it the same thickness or thinner. The thinness balances the size.

@Rich- Keep dreaming. Quad core this year, hex-core next year, octa-core year after. Something will dwarf the texh used before. You will continue to be out of date, it’s part of technology.

  6. To be honest, yes @Dono, I hope too that they wont keep increasing the size. My S2X is just the right size and i’ve got less then avg sized hands. Though I dont know of any people who use their touch screen smartphone with just one hand. Regardless of the size, where typing is concerned, you’d have to use both hands – even without touch screen phones. But to be able to fit the phones in a mens type pants pocket (we all know womens dont have the room we do in there) yeah hopefully they keep it this size. If it the phones get too large to do that, then definitely wouldn’t get it

    • I would assume they may make the screen biger, but kill the bezel making it close to the same size as the current S2. The Note series is reserved for the bigger sizes/screens.

  8. Damn I was really hoping for a Q1 release since I can upgrade at the end of Feb, well at least it should be Q2 so Ill wait a bit longer, but if the Xperia S launches before it in Canada I may buy that instead

  9. I agree the current S2 is about the biggest size I’d want to have for a phone. I like to leave it my pocket, so any bigger would seem to be cumbersome. Any bigger and it seems like they’re encroaching on table territory, and I don’t want to try and fit a tablet in my pocket.

So I’m glad I have the s2, because it seems the next gen of phones will be even bigger :(
