BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 rumoured to be available February 17th

RIM announced that the very anticipated OS 2.0 upgrade for the BlackBerry PlayBook will be available to the masses sometime in February. Devs have been tinkering around in beta for a few weeks now, plus we had a look at the much improved PlayBook OS at CES this year – finally now includes contacts, calendar, email, plus a few other notable improvements like the on-screen keyboard, content sharing via Bluetooth, movie rentals and apps. There’s been a few rumoured dates as to when this OS update will officially be available, but BerryReview has been tipped that “RIM is committed & scheduled” to launch PlayBook OS 2.0 on Friday, February 17th. No other details are given, but at the very latest it’s only a few weeks away now.

  1. I for one, couldnt be happier. I love my playbook, the OS is absolutely amazng. But it definetly feels unfinished. This update should make it feel much better and hopefully add some much needed apps to the market.

  2. Totally agree. I’ve got a playbook as well as an android tab running a pre release ice build. Right now even though the hardware is good on both, the playbook just can’t come close to matching the experience on the android os. I’m really hoping that this update lives up to its promise as there are a lot of times I’d love to be able to use a 7 inch device.

I want to believe rim can recover.

  3. Can’t wait for the upgrade. I also enjoy my 32G playbook so much that I bought another 64G playbook ($299.00) as a backup. The upgrades will be a bonus to all dedicated playbook fans.

  5. I bought a 16gb Playbook just before Christmas. Since then my iPad has been gathering dust somewhere, as the Playbook, even in its V1.0 release is so much nicer to use than the iPad.

I loved the device so much I went out and bought the 64gb version today and will be giving the 16gb one my son.

Anyone criticising the Playbook either hasn’t got one, or is making assumptions that are untrue. It is actually incredibly slick, has an amazing screen display, has an OS that is so much more pleasant to use than Apple’s or the Android OS, and that’s even before OS 2 has come out.

Agreed, there aren’t a gazilion apps, but I don’t need all those apps. The apps that included (Word to Go, Excel to Go, etc) are superb, and neither Apple nor Android tabs come with anything anywhere near as good included.

All in all I’d give the Playbook 10 out of 10 and I can’t see me going back to the iPad. It is clunky in comparison.

  6. I enjoy my PlayBook as well, if they had some of the key big apps like Skype their would been less criticism. I am glad they just didn’t push just any email client and spent time on building a great solution.

If the PlayBook had launched now with all these goodies, it definitely would have been better received. Though then people would say the hardware is lacking. lol

And I don’t see them releasing this on a Friday. If anything it will be the Tuesday after. Historically all the updates have been on Tuesday.

  7. Former RIM employee and beta tester of the PlayBook. I agree, it is a beautiful piece of hardware. I am actually thinking of picking one up before OS 2.0 comes out in case it ends up being a huge success and the prices go back up. :)

The OS currently is very similar to WebOS, which I also really like (I own an HP Touchpad).

  13. While the Playbook is a pretty slick device. Had the pleasure of playing with one extensively when one of my family members got one during the sale. However, it can’t really compare to my ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime since the screen is too small for me and there’s just simply not enough apps.

With Android 4.0, I can’t see why I would want to get a Playbook. The amount of polish Google gave Android 4.0 is so substantial, it was worth the wait. However, there’s one thing that the Playbook does exceptionally well is the tight integration that it has with RIM’s current phone offerings. I really wish Google would include some sort of phone and tablet integration so that an Android phone can directly communicate and do things with an Android tablet like how the Playbook does with RIM’s phone line-up.

  19. I bought a 32 GB Playbook for my younger daughter, who especially likes the speed and the multitasking. As a medical student, she finds it very handy, as it fits nicely into a pocket of her white coat, enabling her to carry key reference works around easily. It also tethers with her Blackberry Bold 9900, so she does not have to pay extra for a data plan.

I also bought a 32 GB Playbook for myself, and am waiting on the OS update before I get going using it, as I don’t have a Blackberry phone to tether it to, and will need to use the new features, like native e-mail. For me, a key selling point was the ability to have HDMI output, as I want to use the Playbook for presentations.

    • what phone carrier is your daughter with because both AT&T and sprint blocks the tethering. with sprint i had to pay to use the phone as a modem which is $15.00 a month.

      Thanks

  23. I love my PB. Who needs 101 fart apps. Apple people always ask each other what kinds of games do they have. Playbook people show each other what they can do. I gave my Ipad2 to my kids and they use it as a converter for the AppleTv. I got sick of not being able to gracefully shutdown apps instead of crashing them with all those red x’s to hit. Dont even get me started about the non multitasking and hitting the STOP button when I want to swap apps. QNX needs to come out and show what a Multitasking Champ this Beast they have created and unleashed!!

  24. I think blackberry should provide a way to automatically pack android app from android marketplace to blackberry marketplace. And at least have a plan to attract or award
android developer to port over their apps. Rim is making the same mistake by assuming people will like and support their new os. Rim never understand they can’t stay at home and wait for develop to bring their app to them. They need do something other than just give a os ready for android app.

  25. I’m just a newbie on the playbook, so I am curious if this is the release of the QNX O/S? I am looking at the playbook and not sure if I should be concerned about the roadmap to the next O/S release.

  29. Rim has to keep to the target date as the ruputation of the cmpany is at stake. The company has already raised the exectations of remaining blackberry customers who are wainting for RIM”S -OS 2.0 which is due tomorrow 17th of february 2011.Meet this deadline and expect the stock prise go up from Tomorrow.Any lapse will simply singnal companys inability to meet their own deadlines which will adversely affect the companys reputation in canada and the world as a whole.Leave no room for the customers to think the company is in a diaray.
