Majority of our Canadian banks have a mobile banking app – CIBC, TD, RBC, ING – and now HSBC. If you bank with HSBC and have an iPhone you can download the app for free. The app has similar features as the other banks, offers the ability to view your account information and transaction history, pay bills, transfer funds, check exchange rates, locate ATMs and “Send and receive secure messages”. No word on a BlackBerry, Windows Phone or an Android app.

National Bank also launched its app last month.

This is ridiculous. HSBC (or HSBC Canada) is underwater with its US and Europe business and has to sell its assets to raise the reserve (i.e. the most recent move being selling it securities unit to National), yet they spend the $ to develop this. Question is, why would you sell a profitable unit in the securities house (which makes tons of trailer fees) and develop something that doesn’t really mean anything being a revenue driver? This says so much about HSBC being a business, having terrible management, and how deeply in trouble they are. Mobile banking app is not going to save the day nor drive more clients to them.

Yet another reason to have a lock combo on your phone. I can’t even count how many stories I’ve heard of people losing their phones with ALL of their personal accounts logged in and easily accesible that ended up being compromised.
If you can’t handle a smartphone – do not buy one!

Now they need a brokerage app so I can buy RIM and sell it 5 minutes later while sitting on the can.
