Next iPhone chipset will support AWS, says T-Mobile CMO

There has been rumours in the past that Apple has been considering developing an iPhone that is AWS compatible – unfortunately it’s never surfaced. Special thanks today goes out to Neville Ray, CTO of T-Mobile USA, for resurrecting the rumour by saying that he’s seen Apple’s next chipset and that it could bring the “revolutionary” device to their network. According to a report in CNET, Ray stated that “The next chipset will support AWS. The challenge that existed in the past will go away”. Of course, nothing is final and Ray noted that it’s up to Apple make the deal happen. For us Canadians, an AWS iPhone would certainly bring good news to Wind Mobile, Mobilicity and Videotron.

    • Tell that to 75% of Videotron customers that keep asking everyone when the iPhone will be available.

  7. Huge mistake! Apple doesn’t like other companies revealing their secrets ahead of their keynotes. I wouldn’t be surprised if T-Mo loses the deal because their CTO ran his mouth too early.

I wouldn’t mind the iPhone being on the new carriers in Canada. I’m paying $60/mo to Telus for 6GB data and decent features, and I want to pay less. Haha.

  9. Only I can see that as soon as AWS is supported AND you can buy and use the iPhone on Mobility, Wind and Videotron. Those carriers WILL increase their prices. Or at least not discount them so much as they are doing right now.

  11. Iphone is for girls NOT INTERESTED. I want a beast Android with nVidia Graphics, dual core baby. How is the iphone even a smart phone, you cant do anything with it. Stupid icons, thats it. Androids get widgets, Androids get live wallpapers, androids get more free app’s. With iphone Angry birds is either bought or a demo. Android you get the whole game FREE and bought removes ads. Apple is junk for highschool girls. Android is BEAST!

  12. I don’t care about iPhone’s in the slightest, but putting in AWS would not be a huge shock at all since it’s the current LTE band up here until the 700MHz auction, and it’s used for LTE in the states. If they want to get in their LTE compatibility, they need AWS functionality.

    • you are right however they could make a phone that supports the AWS band for LTE but not for UMTS. Such a phone would be useless on Videotron/Wind/Mobilicity.

  14. I don’t care about the Iphone, I prefer Android, or even Blackberry, but you can’t deny the benefit Wind and Mobi would have if they could sell the Iphone.

As well as the drawbacks of their network blowing up. lol

  15. If Wind and Mobi get the iPhone prices WILL go up. Depending on how much the prices change, the big 3 MIGHT consider offering some better plans but only in wind and mobi coverage areas.

  16. IAN. Please update thr thread. 9to5mac talked tk tmobilr kn which said that he never said that. Look at 9to5mac to see it as well. That being said i rather use my HTC Raider or bold 9900 then a iPhone. IPhone has a small screen and its not really a good phone anymore. Same old design and nothing changes. Girly phone for sure.

  19. The discount will not effect the prices at the new entrants in canada because apple sets the prices for the Iphone not the plan that the Iphone goes on.

  26. Can the losers on this site who state the iPhone is for girls please be quiet? I’m an android fan, but that doesn’t mean I use it to up my machismo. 4 inch+ phones aren’t ‘manly,’ they’re just more functional. Not everyone is aroused by them as much as you. Now carry on with the intelligent talk :D

  27. Why are android users so ignorant? Instead of being happy that Wind and Mobi will get a highly demanded device which will force the big 3 to be a bit more aggressive on the price, you just keep on trashing the iPhone. It’s Robelus that is the enemy, not apple. If you don’t like the next gen iPhone, fine, but don’t keep talking so much trash. Remember that if it wasn’t for the iPhone android or wp7 wouldn’t even exist today. We would be using a blackberry, or what’s even rose, windows mobile 6.5…

  30. I suspect this will help the new entrants gain critical mass and it will really start to put a dent in the Big 3′s pocketbook. I’m surprised that the Big 3 are not trying to pay Apple to stop development of the AWS version.

In their eyes, paying people off to do immoral acts is called innovation, competition and par for the course.

I’m a former iPhone user and while I think the phone used to be good, it has lost its leading place in technological prowess due to the slow 16 month release cycle Apple has chosen to adopt.

Android is not for everyone so at least there are choices like iPhone, Blackberries, Nokia and WP7 so people can be happy with their purhcases.

  34. T-Mobile USA did say that they were gonna get what turned out to be the iPhone 5 in September last year. I honestly wouldn’t hold my breath about this. If anything, they’ll have to pay a premium, just like Sprint did (20% extra than all the other carriers) to get the device. Honestly, they’re not in any financial position (and neither was Sprint) to make such a deal. They’re losing too much money already as it is!
