Rumour: Samsung Galaxy S III to be announced in February, have a quad-core processor, LTE and possibly a 3D display

Let the rumours start for the next high-end Samsung device to be welcomed into the growing Galaxy family. The Galaxy S and the Galaxy SII have sold well over 30 million units worldwide, but latest unconfirmed word around the web has Samsung set to unveil the Galaxy S III, possibly having the model number of GT-I9500. According to Korean website ETNews, the GSIII might come packed with some impressive specs: Quad-core processor, Super AMOLED Plus 720p display (no word on the screen size), Android OS 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with TouchWiz, LTE-enabled, 2GB of RAM. Probably the most unique feature is that it might incorporate 3D into the device, something we’ve seen HTC and LG already do with the HTC EVO 3D and the LG Optimus 3D. Mobile World Congress in February, hopefully the GSIII will be leaked before.

    • That’s why you root it and then flash a custom ROM, problem solved.

    • @A.Carmine: rooting and flashing is easy if you open your eyes and actually read the instructions. All you need to do first it’s back up the stock ROM and then restore it if things do go wrong with installing a custom ROM. However, if you read the instructions PROPERLY, nothing should go wrong when flashing. I flash custom ROMs all the time on my Galaxy S2. By the way, I do have a life.

  7. What about battery life?? Probably last a few hours at the most, based on current battery technology.

    • In regards to battery life, I agree with you as I own an SGSII LTE, however, I did some light research on “quad-core”, which is supposedley use up less energy than single core units. Having said this, it would still be great if the battery was packed with at least 2200mah.

  8. There will be 3 versions corresponding to the 3 new features.

Oh, and one of them will be named the “Samsung Galaxy III Epic 4G Touch HD X with LTE”.

  10. At this rate the Galaxy S IV will be an 8 core phone with more processing power than my desktop computer.

I’m more concerned about battery life… It’s difficult to justify an upgrade just for the increased technical specifications, but if Samsung released a phone that could run for 2-3 days straight with normal usage, I’d buy one outright as soon as it was released.

    • If it is according to rumor this quad core shouldn’t be like Tegra 3 “Kal-El” using a 45nm SOC. This new rumoured Exynos should be using a 32nm SOC, like wise the new quad-core “Kraits” from Qualcomm will be using a 28nm SOC. The reduction in size should bring battery savings…. hopefully.

Will multiple cores seem like they may drain more power, a careful implementation like the Little-Big system addressed by ARM could do wonders for battery life and processing power.

  12. I’d prefer it without the 3D display. I don’t think it’s necessary and only serves to hurt battery life, especially with that supposed 4G radio.

  13. I seriously hope they: a) keep it at max 4.5″ (or 4.65″) b) not make it a thick phone cuz of a stupid 3D camera and c) give it a 2000+mA battery or at the very least, make it extremely efficient if they use a smaller battery

  22. Is quad core really necessary? Is there anything out there that would justify it? I guess multitasking would be better, but so far dual core is doing an excellent job. Don’t even give that future proof stuff. The smartphone industry is moving at a lightning quick pace, so who knows where it will end up.

Take nothing away from the phone though. If those specs are true, it’s an absolute beast. Battery life is a concern, but there should be ways around it. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a phone that is the size of the Galaxy Nexus.

  23. And I was hoping that 3D hype is finally over. 3D in phone is akin to airbags for bikes. Sounds good on paper, great for marketing features checklist but not really useful once you think about it.

How about improving stuff that actually matters like battery life, being pentaband or decent call quality?

Anyway, looking forward to Rogers Samsung Galaxy S III LTE Redemption 4G (in Rogers Red) …

    • 3D will be useless until Apple introduces it. Then they’ll take credit for putting another revolutionary thing into a phone. Just like Siri. the Apple fanboy will tout Apple as the innovators again. And the world will accept it as usual. I bet if Apple sold bottled water you’d see a line up around the corner of a grocery store. And every Apple fan will accept that it is the best water in the world ever bottled.

  30. Give me a 4″ phone with a 720p display and little to no bezel. I’m getting s**t of all this 4.3″+ s**t. I’ve seen almost none out in the wild yet the stores are full of them.

  31. ALL OF THIS SHIT IS USELESS. CURRENT BATTERY TECHNOLOGY FALLS VERY SHORT WHEN TRYING TO SUPPORT A 1280×720 SCREEN.

My GNex can’t hold a charge/charge at the same time while playing a movie via MHL. It can’t charge through the screens battery usage at 0-1% either (via usb)

Bottom line is it better have a battery the size of the GNote or more especially with those specs.
