You know that Android has gained popularity when uber-entry-affordable carrier Public Mobile hops on board. They promised a couple Androids and here they are: The ZTE N762 and some unknown brand with the name of the “Max”. No word on price points or an exact release date, but those interested can pre-order these today. Both are running Android OS 2.3 and expected to come in under $200. You’ll most likely have to sign up for a data plan (we hear they will be launching a new 3G data plan priced at $45/month).
Here are specs of the Public Mobile Max: 3.2-inch display, 3.2 MP camera, VGA Front-facing camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, Speakerphone, Music player, FM radio, MicroSD card slot (will come with a 2GB card). The ZTE N762 has the same specs but has an increased screen at 3.5-inches, but comes with a 2MP camera.
If you do decide to pre-order you’ll get a free case – Check it out here at Public
We’ll have more info soon.
(Thanks Tipster!)

Galaxy Gio – $149.99
Galaxy 550 Upgradable to 2.3 – $89.99
Galaxy 551 Upgradable to 2.3 – $179.99
Wildfire S – $199.99
Much better then some unknown “Max”.

Quick verdict:
* 550 is rather small, not even a 3.0 inch screen, but for all we know, PM’s phone *could* have the horrible QVGA too. Also, 2.3 on 550 requires newbie-unfriendly modding.
* 551 is all right, excellent for under $100.
* Gio: never tried it due to limitations regarding the camera and modem’s upload speed, but i wouldn’t dismiss it.
* Wildfire S: besides a slim design and HTC Sense, it’s comparable to the Optimus Chic. In other words, an excellent beginner Android. $150 with Virgin Prepaid.
Mobilicity, too, had de-branded Chinese phones at one point. Hopefully Syrup reviews both of PM’s Androids.
All of the Big 3 phones you listed lack a front-facing camera. i don’t know how good MAX’s front-facer will be, but hopefully it makes video calling worthwhile.

FYI to the peeps who think wind/mobi are cheaper ummmm NO…
Public -Province wide calling, Internation text, CD,VM,call waiting call forwarding 3 way calling, 3G DATA,CDN Long distance = $35
Wind – Local Talk, CDN text, CD, call waiting call FWD 3 way calling, 3G DATA, CDN long distance, VM($5 extra) = $34 ( yes $1 cheaper but no VM and poor call quality)
Mobi – Local Talk, CDN/US Text, CD,3G DATA, VM($8 extra),call waiting call fwd and 3 way calling($5 exrtra) and CDN Long Distance($10 extra) = $48 ( WOW what a deal )
Chatr – CDN talk, CDN/US text, CD, VM, Call waiting , Call FWD, 3 way calling, 3G DATA (100 MB) = $45
SO WHO OFFERS MORE AND IS CHEAPER…I THANK YOU AND HAVE A GOOD DAY!!

Completely agree. Reminds me of the LG Optimus Chic, which can get away with it, considering it was only $75. But the MAX just overdoes it, as in “MAX bezel. :O

Thumbs up to Public Mobile for featuring video chat on the Public Mobile MAX! Lack of keyboard is disappointing, but hopefully a device with that plus a front-facing camera will come soon. Don’t forget your “free Roots leather case” coupon when buying PM’s Androids! Please expand, Public!

Can ask why in every PM post you have to ask for a Buzz review? If you know something we all dont know then just spit it out. It’s getting kind of old…

It seems PM has given fair and affordable price. As now they are offering smartphones I agree with them that they are starting from low end price to Mid price Android phones is best option for them and for PM customers too. I am ready to switch as soon as I persnally check those phones. Good Luck and hope PM is doing better for every Canadian & Canadian Telecom Industry. Hope to see them expanding in each and every Province in future. If you work for any phone company just do your job there. It feels too bad when you make each other so ignorant and do post stupid ideas & comments. Appreciate all if they do good and don’t be jealous.

Public Mobile’s androids will operate on their new 3G EVDO high speed network. Download speeds are FASTER than those of both mobilicity and wind, this is due to having data and voice calls carried seperately on their network so that they do not interfere with each other as can happen during peak download times with the hspa carriers. Also, there will be a promotional $30 price point on the monthly rate plan that will offer Unlimited Province Wide Talk, Text, Data, Call Display, Voicemail, Call waiting!

I got the UMX Max, but it is pretty laggy because it only has 256mb internal memory. The ZTE actually runs a lot smoother and it has 512mb of internal memory. I couldn’t care less about the front facing camera. Get the ZTE!

My second phone ever! (in less than a year) So It’s all new to me and being ignorant about other phone types I don’t have a skewed impression or a reference to compare.
1) I can talk, text surf unlimited. $30 for first 6 month then
$45 still unlimited.
2)I’m not locked into a contract. Stop using by stop paying.
3)No contract, credit check, pay as you go month to month.
I don’t travel, so coverage works for me. And I don’t need it to do everything my friends phone can do. Being a new service provider other than the monopoly of the big three, Rogers, Bell, and Telus. Public Mobile will start slowly and soon provide more as they have been.

Alright guys, I bought the Max for about $175 the other day at Complexe Cousineau. Was such a great and awesome phone for the first 2 days. Until i accidentally dropped it while texting. It didn’t even fall from far or anything. now the whole touch screen is smashed and half the things on the phone don’t work and the only way to “fix it” is to buy a new phone, Public mobile does not do repairs, and since I dropped it its not their problem and its my fault.. I think it’s there fault.. All of you are bound to drop your phone at least once.. and when it happens don’t be surprised if your whole touch screen is smashed… It’s so cheap.. I can’t even sell my phone for $10 3 days later.. also whenever my battery gets under 10% it just shuts down lol… BUT look it fell and it smashed the screen.. I can still go on facebook and s**t. most of you will say its my fault because i dropped it. but your time will come. I’ll keep this phone until i really get fed up. I don’t even think i will pay for the next month.
