RIM’s new “BlackBerry Tag” feature will be coming soon to NFC BlackBerry smartphones

If you have the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Curve 9360 you might receive the new “BlackBerry Tag” that RIM revealed today. At the GITEX conference in Dubai, co-CEO Jim Balsillie, announced this new “Tag” feature will be available in the next BlackBerry 7 OS update, but is “Subject to network operator certifications”, so there’s no confirmation if/when Canadians carriers will make this available.

As to what “BlackBerry Tag” can do you for you, those with NFC built-in, currently the 9900 and 9360, will be able to tap your smartphones together and share contact information, documents, URLs, photos and easily add each other as a BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) contact. RIM is also thinking about their developer community and making the APIs public they can incorporate “tap to share” in their apps.

Jim Balsillie said “BlackBerry Tag is an exciting and innovative feature that makes sharing contact information and multimedia content effortless and seamless. BlackBerry Tag opens a new dimension to the BlackBerry platform that is powerful, simple and intuitive and we think it will be welcomed by both users and developers.”
