Koodo releases a $25/month 2GB data plan

New plan has emerged over at Koodo Mobile. They have replaced the $25/month 500MB data plan and released 2GB data plan for the same price. The good news is that this isn’t a one-off promo as it seems this will be a permanent plan with “no end date” in sight.

(Thanks tipster!)

  3. I hope this will push for the end of 500mb plans. But – Unlimited would be better, of course!

  4. or you could be with mobilicity and get unlimited data for 10 bucks a month…

    • True… as long as you stay within the Mobilicity coverage area. Outside of that, it will be $5/MB, or $5120/GB, for Rogers EDGE data roaming. That’s over 400 times more expensive than Koodo. :(

But 2 GB for $25/month is aggressive. Koodo’s parent, Telus, charges $45/month for the same allowance. Let the games begin! :D

  6. Hopefully all the major carriers implement these kind of plans. I know they use to say how America would go tiered and we would be better but were not and plans like this make it far easier on us and give us quite a good data plan and a decent low end one.

    • 6GB for $30 on a 3-year contract, vs 2GB for $25, I’ll take the $25 plan.

    • lol stop bragging so much.

2GB for 25$ is an amazing deal condering the big 3 have 500MB for 25$, that is 4 times the data and this is not a promotion.

so no 3 year contract and anyone can sign on this at anytime

  8. Capped data > unlimited, because you eliminate the whores downloading porn and movies, slowing everyone else’s connection

I will say however, that 2GB should be the absolute minimum for capped data. 100MB and 500MB are too little to enjoy your phone to a good extent.

    • That’s being short sighted. 500MB plans was the norm for ages, but now it’s a joke. Data consumption is growing exponentially, but data caps are growing slowly. (In fact Bell recently almost got away with decreasing DSL caps) You may say 2GB is the minimum now, but next year 2GB will feel restrictive, but the caps will be the same. Unlimited (with fair use policy) makes more sense.

  10. Dear limited data carriers,

We know what 2GB means. The only market segment interested in sending 1,000,000 emails is wise enough to use other people’s connections.

    • Exactly, I do not need more than 500MB at the moment, so why do I need to pay for more? I would be willing to pay more -in a certain limit- than what I need only if it was for unlimited data.

  17. any reason why Telus stock has skyrocketed in the past year and a half……..First to take the step in the consumer direction. Telus introduces more logical cancellation policies(not just in Quebec where it’s law). and now Koodo going the way of better value. I was scared that with data changes in the US, it would solidify the big 3 and their ”reasoning” for ridiculous data pricing.
I despise Telus, but frankly, this move is by far the smartest move they have made. I only despise their marketing for Koodo, that mexican masked dude is too much of a stereotype

  20. When you see Verizon, one of the largest carriers in the US ending the unlimited data plans, you know it’s not feasible for the carriers to offer unlimited. I see 500MB to 1000MB as reasonable usage on a mobile. But people that gets unlimited will use it as such, if not then why not?

If you’ve ever been in an office building where hundreds of people uses the same carrier, you know that the data speed will be spotty at best due to capacity. Yet, no one is willing to pay more to have consistent data speeds.

Further, data consumption will increase as people find more ways to use them at a reasonable cost.

  21. Very good move by Telus/Koodo. Considering coverage and the fact it’s not time limited promotion and no contract required, I would say this is the best data option on the market today. Nice bonus if you have a tablet and use phone as a hotspot.

Yes, I know that Wind and Mobilicity do offer unlimited for less, but their footprint/coverage is so much smaller that it’s really not worth comparing.

  22. Nice, I wonder if they’ll still offer 500MB for a lower rate, the 100MB “lite” add-ons are stupid. I could use this 2GB bit for my paired BB+Playbook.

Maybe Telus will change to this as well, since Koodo is the stepchild carrier.

  24. That is still expensive
It only cost them few cents to get a GB of data to us and we have to pay $25 a month…
Many countries already have laws that make comapies to drop their prices, and don’t feel bad for them bc they are still making a log of money

  25. People keep talking about Wind having unlimited data! But just the other day I received a txt from Wind saying they were going to slow down my data because of the ‘Fair Use’ policy!!! What kind of unlimited data is that??? When I called to find out how much data I have used, they said it was around 4gb!!!

Doesn’t seem like unlimited to me!!!

  26. People will complain about anything. I sell phones, 2 gigs is a LOT of data. I use my iPhone a lot and tether it to my WiFi iPad 2 and I’ve never even come close to the 3 gigs I have on my plan. Most people are satisfied with the usual 500 MB they get though I definitely don’t think that’s enough.

Fido and Virgin better follow suit, especially now that Virgin is charging $30 for 500 MB last I checked.

  29. I never really felt restricted by 500 meg, more POed that I was paying so much for it. 2 gig now that hotspoting is enabled on iPhones is perfect.

I have been factory unlocked on Koodo since September ’10.

  30. The “6GB” for $30 that some people are bragging about was a promotional offer only.

It’s not a standard deal in the market, and if you’re lucky to have it – be glad you’re one of the few.

As luck would have it I’m in the GTA 99.9999999999999999% of the time. What’s even better is that when I’m in the US I can get a prepaid plan with T-Mobile that will give me 5GB of data and unlimited local calling for $70. Not bad.
