Video: Watching Netflix on a Windows Phone 7 device

Netflix announced today that us Canadians will be able to stream movies on the upcoming Windows Phone 7 devices. The app is free to download but you’ll have to give your credit card details to sign up for the 30-day trial… which is a $7.99 monthly charge afterward. The good thing is that the you can stream as many movies as you want and that the video quality was wicked on the Focus (mainly due to the 4-inch Super AMOLED display). The bad thing is that it’ll blow your monthly data plan out of the water and the selection of movies isn’t the greatest. We’ve got a video of the app in action on the upcoming Rogers Samsung Focus. On another note, the app is also available for the iPhone and iPad. Android and BlackBerry users are still waiting. Check out the video after the break

  1. So, Microsoft paid Netflix so that they release an app for their platform first instead of the more popular BB and Android?

  2. This will only be useful on an unlocked AWS Windows phone using WIND unlimited data. Or for the few who still have Fido unlimited data.

  3. If I lived in US I might be bitter that wp7 got this before Android does. However, Netflix Canada video selection is sooooooo pathetic that I don’t even give a xxxx.

  4. Microsoft and Netflix have collaborated in the past, so this is not surprising. First, XBOX 360 had exclusive console access, then Netflix chose Silverlight to do instant streaming on computers, now they’ll first get released on WP7. This is obviously not a purely monetary affair as Xbox and Silverlight are very strong platforms, well suited to Netflix’ purpose; it’s only natural that they have a strong partership. This was also announced a long time ago, the difference is that it is now available for us Canadians. though i don’t like the selection of movies here. What i REALLY want is the Zune pass to come to Canada. The rest of the WP7 stuff is cool, but i’m not looking for a new phone anytime soon.

  5. WP7 has NO cut and paste option, and will NOT connect to a hidden Wifi router. For those two reasons alone I would never consider these devices.

    • Taylor, cut and paste will be coming in a couple months. How many hidden routers do you need to connect to? Im sure its also coming in a future update in a few months.

  7. People tend to forget or don’t know that WP7 does not even support custom ringtone. Even my 5-yr-old dumb phone can do custom mp3 ringtone. I’m sure more shortcomings will surface once people get their hands on it.

Sure updates are coming, but when? in a few months could be 1~2 months or 11~12 months.

It may have potential, but it’s not there yet, not even close.

  8. Hey guys, I just tried a family members windows phone 7 LG device from Telus, and we can’t find the Netflix app on the marketplace to save our lives. I think it’s been removed. Any one else notice this?

If anyone sees it there let us know where please, it is supposed to be in entertainment/free but its defeinitely now showing there or in a search of all apps. I can’t find any info posted anywhere about this.
