Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android upgrades end at OS 2.1

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and X10 mini are getting ready for a OS upgrade to Android 2.1 sometime in Q4. That’s certainly good news as it’ll bring some good enhancements such as live wallpapers, 5 homescreens, HTML5 support and “social phonebook” that links your Facebook/Twitter in with your contacts. After this upgrade Sony Ericsson will push out a minor “2.1x” release to improve Timescape and Mediascape. Unfortunately, according to this internal doc, that’s the end of the line for the Xperia X10 lineup upgrades.

  1. In term of firmware updates, SE is not really doing a great job.

  2. Is that document a product lifetime roadmap, or simply a 2010 roadmap?

  3. No multitouch, I’m guessing… And EOL-ing X10 @ 2.10 was quite predictable. Big disappointment SE! No wonder they’re going south!

  5. If they released the phone with 2.1, and made a quick update to 2.2 this summer, this would have been a great phone.

    • …and stopped at the latest update.

Also the iPhone 3G came in 2008, so that’s 2 years, not 3.

    • Indeed. Even though they mangled up the 4.0 release for the 3G, the 4.1 release has brought speed back to the good old iPhone 3G.

  7. 36 months of upgrades are better than 6, me thinks. Apple is really stretching the life of the iPhones, whereas Androids are dead to the manufacturer after 6 months. Maybe that’s why used iPhones get much more money than used Androids.

  8. I really can’t understand how anyone could buy the X10. It has been a trainwreck for Sony even BEFORE it was launched. It’s been delay after delay. No one cares for timescape and mediascape. With the very exception of HTC Sense UI, the majority of skin overlays are awful. If the companies wanted to push their products, they simply need to push stock Android would fantastic hardware specs. That’s the way Android needs to go.

    • You obviously dont know Sony Ericsson well, nor do you seem to have used the X10. Stock Android is simpley incomplete, and not suitable for a core phone maker like Sony Ericsson. HTC is a mere hardware maker, who can make stuff for others. Sony Ericsson isnt. An example of the incompleteness: the 2.0 version didnt even have a dedicated phone button, the phone icon was like an application lying on one of the 4 screens, which you could even delete!! this was ofcourse corrected by google in the subsequent update, but it just goes to show, that Android as such is a base, a platform, from which phone makers create their own customized front ends. And differentiation is a core fundamental to their business. Afterall, its not a computer where all look the same once you turn them on.

  12. Looks like someone erased my comment tsk tsk tsk

Lots of Android fanbois on this site and it looks like the oweners are encouraging it too.

Let me reiterate my point :

Apple provides updates for 3 years for their devices.

With an Android device, you’re at the mercy of the phone manufacturer or worse even : at the mercy of the cell provider.

No matter how fanboish you are, you have to admit that in terms of support Apple wins this one hands down.

  15. I own this phone and boy do I regret getting it and not an iphone4. I know for some reason android guys just hate the iPhone with a passion. But as much as I can do with an android phone, at the end of the day I just want a stable phone, the x10 is not. It I very laggy, fruit ninja is so slow compared with the iPhone version. It takes to many clicks to just call a person, I got a better contact app, but that’s something that should be so important on a PHONE. My x10 will shut itself off for no good reason, sometimes it comes back on, sometimes it doesn’t. It freezes all the time. I just really like the stability of iOS. Today I was using the wonderful nav app from google, it’s really great, then the phone just shut off, I have the task killer app, I use it all the time, infact I had just rebooted the phone with a battery removal! I do love android, perhaps I’ll try an HTC, but I’m done with this phone. I have a feeling the updates won’t do much. Last SE phone I ever buy.

  16. I don’t consider this definitive evidence but if it is SE should never get a cent from any of us ever again.

  17. X10 has been a horrible phone and definatly put me off of SE and Android ever again ,I have a Iphone 4 now which continues to impress and I came from a Nokia N95 which for its lifespan was also a great phone SHAME on SONY for this junk product I was silly and bought into your reputation before reading reviews.

  19. The birth of this phone is very glitchy, Hopefully, seeing as software runs the show, with all the negative feedback ericsson has gotten, they will have something to prove and perform. I loved the w810i, and this phone has lots of potential.. Good luck boys, i’m not givin up on ya yet..
