Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant launched by Bell

Another stellar Android has landed in Canada. Devices just get better here every week. Bell has officially released the anticipated Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant. You can check out a quick video pf the device in action here, plus pics we shot from the free Metric concert the other day here.

This is available for $149.95 on a 3-year; $349.95 on a 2-year; $399.95 on a 1-year and no contract for $449.95. The Vibrant comes loaded with Android 2.1 with an upgraded to 2.2 scheduled for later this year, a 1GHz processor, 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 5 megapixel camera, Video calling, Wi-Fi, GPS, Samsung’s Social Hub, Google Maps, Google Talk and access to apps from the Android Market.

Just noticed another contest Bell is holding. They state that if you “Buy a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant before September 3 and you’ll be automatically entered into a draw to win a 55-inch Samsung LED HD TV”.

    • Yes I have the 6 gig data plan on my vibrant. But I’ve also had 4 handsets since launch date. Everyone of them has froze to ba battery pull. This latest one the battery is no good. Not happy with Bells vibrant.

  4. So is this dual-band HSDPA (850/1900) or is it tri-band (850/1900/2100)? If it’s the former, then they blew it. Bell’s Vibrant? No, thanks.

  5. No contract price should read $499.95, also on a 3 year term Best Buy is selling it at $99 with a $75 gift card.

  6. And what are you going to do with the extra 2100 band? Unless you have a European SIM card it’s far too expensive to use data while roaming. I assume there’s quad band GSM in here for roaming calls.

  7. I played with the phone last night in the Bell store here in Ottawa on Merivale – demo unit for the staff. It certainly is impressive. The size and quality of the screen blows you away. The UI is good but I kind of like the drop down application screen like other Android devices. Instead, you access them through an ‘Appliations’ icon in the home banner at the bottom along with the phone icon. The camera is not the best though. I managed to email myself a photo. The iPhone4 seems to be better.

  9. Same here I’m REALLY tempted to get this phone. I’m just concerned about Bell’s pricing structure. I just want basic voice with a 6 gig data plan. I don’t need all these other features! So I’m torn between this, the desire, and grudgingly, the iphone 4.

  10. The big question is… does it still have the malfunctioning GPS problem that users are reporting world wide?

  11. I also would like a report from users on the GPS issue and the compass issue. If you have bought this phone today could you please post to let us know. I am chomping at the bit.

  12. GPS issue can be resolved with a quick fix. You just have to adjust some setting behind the scenes. Just go to phandroid or XDA and they have the steps.

  14. Potentially going to wait until Virgin Mobile or Rogers gets the phone. This kind of stuff worries me about Virgin though – http://www.phonecomplaints.ca/Complaint-Meter.asp ; http://www.prepaidreviews.ca/virginmobile.html. Anyone have complaints about VM to contradict the JD Power ratings?

  15. @Maestro. I realize it must be hard for you to follow a link and click on “specifications”, so I did it for you. Yes, it has 16GB onboard according to the Bell website.

  19. Who WAIT! Bestbuy has it for $99 on a 3 year and plus a $75 gift card? Is this for Canada? I cant find any promotion like that on their website.

    Anyone able to confirm this?

If so, this will be such an amazing deal and I will get this ASAP!

  20. @Al: Has anyone been able to get the 6GB/$30 on the Vibrant?

I picked up my unit today; I was able to attach the 6gb data plan to my voice plan.

Loving the phone by the way… Android has a learning curve but already I find myself tweaking things to my liking. It’s not rigid at all compared to Apple.

  22. I’ve read at least a dozen recent reviews for this phone as I have been trying to decide between it and the HTC Desire (or perhaps even wait for the HTC Vision/Vanguard/WhateverTheyWantToCallItToday). They all mention that it freezes, slows down, reboots randomly, etc. It’s quite a tempting phone, but I think I’ll wait and see if they have fixed these annoying issues.

  23. I get mine today! Foolishly bought a Motorola Dext last week & within 24hrs found out about the Vibrant. Needless to say, requested a Vibrant & haven’t touched the Dext since. Incredible reviews and specs from ASIA an US markets (released there previously). So what it doesn’t have a front facing camera or flash… not much else negative about it!

  24. SO just bought it. It is indeed triband HSPA with 850/1900/2100 and otherwise identitcal to the inernational version.

Bell require you to buy it with a plan unless you are on Bell. The minimum plan is 30 days and I can cancel it tomorrow. Unlock can only happen after 30 days but we’ll see how the online unlockers are faring after monday.

  26. @Al That ‘fix’ posted doesn’t work for everyone. Also it doesn’t really solve the GPS issue, it’s a workaround by locating using wireless cell towers instead of just the GPS.

  29. Some have claimed it’s a GPS hardware issue that was resolved when the hardware was replaced. Here’s hoping the ones currently being sold in Canada are fine.

    Thanks

  33. Regarding the 6GB data plan option ($30), two Bell stores confirmed that this plan can be had on any smartphone, and any voice plan ($30 and over).

And to echo some of the other posts: forget the Epic keyboard – once you use Swype, you won’t want it! Swype is frickin’ amazing!

  35. I’ve had this phone for about 6 weeks. The first one crashed and died 2 days before the 30 day in store replacement time was up so they gave me another. It would just start up and shut down over and over. This one has been restarting once or twice a day on its own, I just hear the start-up sound at random times coming from the phone. It froze while I was trying to answer a call today, would not pick up the call but would still switch apps. After I pulled the battery and restarted I saw it had sent my friend who was calling about 20 default messages (I’m driving, I’m in a meeting etc.) He told me he was freaking out when the messages came pouring in.

The camera is great, even in low light, best feature of the phone. Otherwise the phone is crap, too much going wrong. I need a phone that works! I’ve been sold s**t. Now I have to buy a phone that works.
    Bell!

  36. I got this phone 3 weeks ago and from day one it was freezing up and shutting down multiple times a day then after a few days (and right when I was about to return it) it stopped doing it. Well yesterday (after connecting to Kies to back up some stuff) it started shutting down again and has done it about 10-15 times since. It’s going back to the store tomorrow! I am so mad, I love this phone and even worse, I disconnected my home phone to just use this one and now I am missing calls on top of the many that are dropped. I have really crappy reception but I am in a basement apartment, but still my husbands Blackberry works fine…
