I know the new Android-powered Galaxy S Vibrant was a very anticipated device… but I didn’t think that such a big lineup would form outside Bell’s Yonge and Eglinton location. Apparently the line started forming around 3:00am. Bell sent out a press release that interviewed the fist people in line, John and his wife Sarah: “Tomorrow is my wife’s birthday, and I wanted to give her a great gift. I like everything about the Galaxy S – the Android OS, video recording and Social Hub.”
Have you picked up a Vibrant? There are a couple more pics after the break
(Thanks Julie!)

I was dead set on a Droid 2. Now the Galaxy S has drawn my attention to the Samsung brand for the first time in years (Had an old Samsung flip phone about 6 years ago). Though I have no plans for this particular phone, I learned about the Galaxy S “Pro” with a slide out keyboard. Does anyone know if there is a launch date rumoured for the “Pro” version?
Might actually get the “Pro” instead of the Droid 2, with its encrypted boot loader.

Chris, no need to worry about bootloader, the D2 is already rooted

Nobody was hired to stand in line, Bell was giving away 5 phones every hour from 9-12.

This is good for Canada. Maybe the carriers will see now that people really do want Android, and not cheap a*s Android devices, good ones like the Galaxy line. Now if they can’t only enlist HTC or Motorola to get us some EVO or Droid X like devices. We’ll be sittin’ pretty!

@Joca – Settle down there, not everyone is stuck in the 9-5, 8 hour a day, job. Some of us are independent, with our own business, so we make our own ours. Might want to look into getting into that area. That’s what Canada is really all about, being independent. If you bought the lie they taught in school about getting a “good job”, you blew it. Self employment is where it’s at.

I picked up one today at my local best buy. I felt pretty good getting the galaxy s for 99 bucks with that 75 dollar gift card. I’ve been playing with for a few hours now and I think this puppy is going to get rooted. I really dont think I like the touch wiz interface.

Galaxy phones are getting poor reviews because of the Samsung skin. Power users will be happier with an HTC phone such as the Desire.

@Mike P, I have no clue why it wasn’t covered here. My girlfriend lives near the store and got an email regarding the contest and hours, I live outside of Toronto and my email only stated the phone would be out August 6.

@Adi – I got an email from Bell yesterday because I signed up for that 1-phone-a-day-giveaway. That’s the only way I knew. I’ll figure out how to submit tips for next time I guess. :p
There’s no way that the Galaxy S would get an IPhone like launch. Apple’s got the need/want factor nailed.
That being said after looking at all the specs I’ve decided on the Galaxy S. It’s got most of the features I want so I’ll be picking one up tonight at BB.
p.s. I’d be drooling more if there wasn’t so many horror stories about trying to use the hardware upgrade credit. 99$ for Galaxy S + 75$ gift card is insanely cool only if you can actually get it. :p

@TNSF – Power users will most likely _root_ their phones so the Samsung skin won’t be a problem.

Jason C, No gifts cards on upgrades at BB. New Activations only, and the price is 149.99 as a renewal as well. (Thanks bell, couldn’t pitch the extra 50 bucks huh?)
Launch went great. My store got 4, I sold 3, Coworker got 1.
I was QUITE surprised I had more people ask about it today than the iPhone!

Yeah, I was there, and they were pulling people off the street to get free phones. It was a draw for 15 phones in 3 hours. They had free coffee, loud music and muffins for us as well. People weren’t paid to stand in line, that’s for sure. Free phones and concerts? Come on. Of course there will be line ups and crowds, it’s not like Apple wouldn’t ever do that! It wasn’t even a bunch of Android fanboys, a few, yes, but a lot of them waiting were just normal people who thought it would be cool to get a free phone, or free coffee at the very least.

I went to a few stores today and didn’t see any the area I searched around in BC (Coquitlam). Thought it was weird, but I didn’t intend to buy it anyways — just have a glance.

Walked into my mall’s Bell store at 3:45 and got one no problem. In fact the store was almost deserted. Totally love it. I can definitely see that motions in TouchWiz aren’t *completely* smooth but since I have nothing to compare it to the speed is fine with me. No jarring or even noticeable lag when opening messaging. GPS seemed to work on the way home on the road but it definitely doesn’t work in my house, need to test it more.

It was nice seeing people picking up Galaxy S’ today at the Bell store here at the Burlington Mall, envious somewhat. At the end of the day I picked up a Palm Pre. After doing extensive research for the past three weeks and hearing about all the glitches and returns and regrets about every phone on the planet, the only group of people who didn’t have complaints were Palm Pre users, which is great I don’t like headaches.
All the Palm Pre users got their 1.4 updates and haven’t complained. Got the automatic over air update directly to the phone, loved that I didn’t have to go online and crack this or unzip that only to find it doesn’t work like the countless Android and Blackberry and Windows users. Whew.
Would’ve loved to get a Galaxy but the fact is you can’t beat a $35 a month unlimited plan. I honestly won’t do more than make calls and texts with my phone, I’m old school with my moleskin for notes and such, so… Not hating on Android but it would only be wasted in my hands. I love gadgets but I hardly use them. Palm has a better app store than I’ve been told but no time for that anyway. A flash update in October and new phones and more updates out of palm next year. Decent pick up.

Just saw the epic review over at Phonedog, not really envious of the Vibrant anymore. The Epic has a slide out keyboard, that tips the scale for me.

Well I debated, although I had to buy a phone 3 months ago when my touch died suddenly, I had a HUG on wifes phone, so I gave her the Milestone, I bought no contract, and picked up the Galaxy. WOW what a differance the screen alone is well worth the update, only thing I wished they had thrown in a microsdhc card, the Milestone came with 16gig, guess I will have to buy one.

I’ve had the Galaxy S for about 2 months now and LOVE the phone. Not sure what people are talking about with the Samsung skin?? This phone has firmware thats easily upgardeable even to Android 2.2 (currently on mine) and running smoothly! Anyone who choses an Iphone 4 over this is quite simply… an i***t!

Also..people are talking about the slide out keyboard Galaxy coming….just know, you sacrifice screen size for that keyboard. Who needs a keyboard, with swype? Can it get any easier to text…..

Their are two slide out keyboard models coming, one is essentially a Vibrant (Galaxy S Pro), has a large keyboard and the full 4″ screen so you don’t have to sacrifice if you don’t mind waiting.

Got mine yesterday morning at “Boutique Bell” at the opening. They got three and there was no “hype” at all at that store. Am I the only geek in my town?!?
BTW at Boutique Bell they give the case, the bluetooth headset and the car charger free.

I was in line yesterday (and I was in phone of the photos above).. The phone is amazing (and the screen of course is a showcase). There was concern of GPS problem on this phone. The initial GPS fix takes a bit longer than my other GPS units, however, once it got a fix, there wasn’t any other issues. And yes, I have a 9-5 day job but once a while I need a ‘toy’ to balance myself and TGIF.

Picked one up yesterday. My short review:
Bell Samsung Galaxy Vibrant:
Build quality is excellent. Runs Google Android. 1ghz processor, tri-band 3G, 16gb internal memory, up to 32gb external (no micro sd comes with the unit in the box). Screen is absolutely amazing. GPU seems to be very quick and responsive when running games. Supports GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth and FM radio through the headphones included in the box. Overall this is an extremely powerful little device, definately ideal for rich media and gaming.
Only minor issue was the lack of camera flash but I’d consider that a very minor issue given the overall quality of the phone.

Well on the second day my Samsung Galaxy S crapped out, the voice on phone calls dropped so low I could barley hear the other end, played with it did multiple calls then wiped it and started fresh, still no luck took it back to store where they looked at it and gave me a new one in replacement, I hope this is not an ongoing thing!

Two days in and I love the phone!!! Blown away my expectations, can’t believe anyone would want an iphone after trying this…I used to have an iPhone and this honestly beats it hands down.
The only negative (and it’s a biggie): Battery life is brutal so far…barely gets through half a day…maybe after a few cycles it will improve. I bet its the Super Amoled screen that’s doing it…in any event, a software update and perhaps 2.2 should fix that.
SWYPING is the way it was MEANT to be! Amazing!

You have to download a Task Killer otherwise if you downloaded a bunch of apps some may running in the background. Or it may even be that some of these apps are using your GPS (any GPS is a battery killer).

My wife was hung up on the new iphone 4 but changed her mind and also got a galaxy with me. After a couple of days, she’s actually saying she’s happier with this phone due the flexibility (Android). Just enabled swype – it’s creepy watching it work and correcting my mistakes! Typing on a keyboard now feels awkward

@firefight16, I upgraded to the Vibrant on Friday also. I was happy to find that it came with a 16 GB internal SD card. You can add and external card (up to 32 GB). I bought an 8 GB (class 6) microSD card from newegg.ca for around $22. I’ll wait until the price comes down on the bigger GBs (’cause we all want the one with the bigger GBs!)
