TELUS HTC Hero to be upgraded to 2.1 mid-August?

For all the TELUS HTC Hero owners out there who are looking for the official Android 2.1 OS updrade it could be coming soon. It was apparently supposed to be released in June but delayed.  We’ve been tipped several times this week that TELUS is currently testing it and is expected to push it out sometime during the first half of August.

Still a rumour, but something hopeful.
More soon!

(Thanks Tipster!)

  4. LOL…That only took what 9 months to do, but at least we’ll get it before the Dream/Magic get it on Rogers, and they’ve been waiting a year. So all I can say is, its about time.

  5. HTC+Telus can go pound salt with this upgrade. I love the phone, but I couldn’t get the latest apps. I waited so long, and this week, I rooted the phone. The delays and platitudes were entirely unacceptable. Rooting was pretty simple, too. They can take all the time they want now. From here out, I set my own schedule.

  6. Already running 2.1 since early June (Modaco r4). Thanks, but no thanks Telus/HTC.

Will be running 2.2 too, thanks to Cyanogen community.

  7. This is f***ing bulls***. We were promised this update in January, then it was February, then it was March, April, May, June and now it’s f***ing August? Every single other country got this upgrade except telus in Canada and Orange in the UK.

How much do you want to bet that they are only doing this to increase sales of the upcoming HTC desire. f*** you very much telus, selling my hero and will try another carrier.

  8. Cant wait till the Galaxy S comes out. Buying out of my contract with Telus, with its shotty HSPA service and 1 bar of signal I always get + dropped calls galore and the 5Mbps download speed I get, not 7.2Mbps like its supposed to have.

Going over to Bell and the Galaxy S which will have Android 2.2 in October and will be a better phone.

  9. @Jason,

Don’t know where you are, but Telus’s HSPA network has actually been pretty good from my experience.

And… don’t waste your money buying out your contract to go ot Bell. It’s the SAME network (shared between the 2)… you’ll only waste your money

  10. @ Hugo.,

I live in the lower mainland in Vancouver, and where my house is I only ever get 2 bars mak on my phone, and I get tons of dropped calls everyday. Even when Im in public locations like the mall and my local ice rink, my signal strength might be better, but I still get dropped calls, so I dont know where you are getting good network coverage from TELUS, cause I’m not.

Plus, I just got a job at Bell working as sales associate, so its pretty logical and comon sense to get out of Telus and go on the network for the company I work for, when I get phone and next to no cost, and receive discounts on my phone bill every month. BOO YAA! lol

  11. I bought this phone back in January and the guy at the store told me Telus was going to be pushing the update within the month, after hearing nothing at all from the emails i sent inquiring to the update so I rooted and have been in control of my own updates since then, I’ll be buying the Galaxy S if it comes to Telus later in the year but I won’t be renewing the contract, when it finally ends we’ll see what carries are available in my area, hopefully wind or shaw will be with some nice devices.

  12. hey Jason Bayer, you do realize that Bell and Telus share the same network so your problems of dropped calls arnt gonna go away with Bell either.

  14. I just went to 2 telus stores today and asked the people at the store when the htc hero is getting updated to 2.1 and they both told me sometime in the middle of September and then one even told me that i should just root my phone cuz its going to be awhile.

  17. Seriously? What a load of crappy. Every month TELUS says “next month”, I will never contract again unless something in Canada changes.

Time to root my phone, happy I have time this weekend.

  18. I bought my Hero the day after it came out. I’ve waited and waited for this upgrade, and finally gave up on Canada Day and rooted my phone. Very happy running 2.1 with VillainRom 12, and rooting will be the only way to get Froyo.

  19. @sined

Your illiterate. I guess you missed the part where I said I work for Bell now. So how much of an idiot are you to work for one company and have another companys product? And I know they are the same network…sounds like someone needs to go back to school (or stay in school).

  22. @Some Devil,

Seeing as how illiterate means the inability to read properly, I do not have that problem. I just can’t spell or use the right words. LOL. But Thanks for pointing that out, I’ll remember it…:-D

  25. I’m a visual learner, does anyone in the GTA want to make some $$$ rooting my Telus Hero? It has to be downgraded via a GoldCard.

  26. This would be news if it wasn’t released so often with different dates. I wish HTC would just pull the trigger all ready.

This would be GOOD news if 2.1 was still the current OS. 2.2?!

By the time I get 2.1 installed version 3 will be out. Ug.

  31. Well it’s September…

    Reply from HTC:
We understand that now that there are phones running Android OS 2.1 available that you are excited to get an update for your Telus Hero. We are still hard at work customing this new version but we expect to have the upgrade finished and ready to go soon. Please understand that it takes time to customize any Android version to ensure you have the intuitive experience Sense provides, and we hope you can be patient for just a little while longer. As well, the update has to be customized specifically to carrier request before the update can become available. At this time, I have no information about when such an update may be available; nor has Telus really given any indication that they intend to have the update made available. That information would unfortunately be between Telus and our engineering department, and we have not heard any information such as this. I apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

Still waiting for one from Telus…
