There are many reasons for Palm owners who have the Pre in Canada to get excited. The main reason is the anticipated update to webOS 1.4 that includes the very much missing ability to record video. On a great device like the Pre it’s very odd that a standard feature these days on a phone like recording video was left out. Back in January at at CES Palm said we could expect an upgrade to webOS 1.4 by the end of February.
Yesterday Palm pushed out the upgrade to 1.4 to “customers on the Sprint network in the US and on the O2 UK, O2 DE, O2 Ireland, and Movistar networks in Europe”. That’s right, us Canadians were left out of the bunch. All Palm stated for the other countries is that “the update is expected to be available for Palm webOS phones on other networks soon.”
Even there’s still a couple days left for Palm to make good on their end of February release, there must be a reason why the second country in the world to launch the Pre was left out. We’ve sent a message to our friends at Palm to get more info.
Well, as we’ve always been up to a week behind (and still no paid apps) why should this one be any different.
It’s not as though Bell thinks it’s important to support us, we’re not apple disciples.

Actually, I’m not surprised. To me it’s further confirmation that Bell is not committed to the Palm Pre.
No Paid Apps, No 1.4 update.
The other day, I went into a Bell store and was looking at a Palm Pre and the Bell employee tried very hard to sell me a BlackBerry instead (even telling me that previous Palm owners have found the Pre difficult to use and saying that I can’t go wrong with a BlackBerry).

This is pretty much the only reason why I’m to stick with iPhone and/or BlackBerry. With iPhone, I KNOW everyone is getting OS updates. and with BB, I can install them myself no matter what carrier (and somewhere, someone releases the updates).

BOOOOOO…
Still waiting. Didn’t Bell wait for a week or so with 1.3.5 to make sure everything went smoothly, then there was an issue with exchange so they waited for the fix 1.3.5.1?
I’m also waiting for paid apps.

We’ve been several days behind the Sprint updates a few times already, I don’t think Palm is actually making any further changes for Bell (or Verizon or Telcel, both also left waiting). I think it’s the carriers holding this back so it’d be Bell shunning us which we should all be used to really . . . .

paid apps has nothing to do with Bell. Palm has said several times they currently dont have a system set to charge funds in canada, i have no idea why it seems so hard for them to do but its not bell, its palm, im sure bell wants paid apps in canada to, buts its palm slowing things down.

Palm stated that it’s coming “too soon” for Bell…my guess is tonight…Gold in Men’s hockey + 1.4 update = perfect day

It seems Palm Chat Support likes to give confidential information.
When asked why Bell had not received their 1.4 update, they stated that maintenance had been made to the back-end servers & that Bell would receive the update on either March 1st or 2nd.

Maybe now that the Olympics are over Bell can pat themselves on the back, then get off their collective asses and push the update.
Pederson, feel free to keep your devices with draconian app distribution policies and antiquated system software. (Not saying they’re bad devices, just calling a spade a spade.)
I quite like how Palm has encouraged homebrew development of the platform. It’s not for everyone, but it works for me. Free tethering is a bonus in this regard.
We’ve had at least two major updates in the past six months. While I recognize that’s at least partly due to Palm’s hurry to get devices into the hands of consumers, it’s rare that I’ve seen such responsiveness and candour from a corporation.
To be sure, for the time being webOS is a niche platform. But given its sound fundamentals, and 1.4 bringing feature-parity with the iPhone, webOS is well positioned in rapidly growing market–even if sales have been a bit slow thus far.
Now if Bell could only get their act together an push updates a little quicker I’d have almost nothing to complain about! (Besides my bill.)
While we’re at it, I’d also like an HSPA Pre Plus and a pony.

I can see everyone’s points…But honstly why cant we just be patient for a bit. It WILL come.
I really dont like Blackberry, And I personally think the iPhone looks like a brick and would never want to get rid of ‘real life’ buttons for a keyboard. So to me, because I really love this Palm Pre…I’m willing to wait a few days for the update. I do check my updates probably 15 times a day to see if its there…But I also understand there must be a reason Bell is holding off on releasing it so for now…I wait

I’m with Janet. I’d rather wait for the Pre update than buy a Blackberry or iPhone.

Regardless of all the good points about Bell and Pre, all we can do in reality is wait, or switch providers/phones. But I think Palm and the Pre are worthy enough for our patience, I wouldn’t be caught dead with a BB or iPhone, let the sheep have those.
