TELUS and CIBC launch mobile payment service on select Android devices, BlackBerry coming ‘later this month’

A few days ago we reported that TELUS would enter the mobile payment space today. CIBC is powering the backend with its Mobile Payment app and this gives TELUS customers the ability to make payments under $50 from their smartphone.

As previously stated, users will have to have an NFC-enabled smartphone (Samsung Galaxy SIII, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy Note II and the HTC One), have a CIBC credit card and have downloaded the CIBC mobile payment app. This payment option is available at over 250,000 Canadian locations that have a MasterCard PayPass or Visa PayWave point of sale system.

According to an internal doc we received last week suggested that TELUS would be opening up its mobile payment option to customers on other devices and other banking institutions, “TELUS has plans to certify and launch additional devices with multiple banking partners in future phases.” While the other banks are still unknown, probably TD and RBC, but the devices coming “later this month” will be the BlackBerry Z10, BlackBerry Q10 and the BlackBerry Bold 9900.

The update to the CIBC Mobile Payment app has yet to arrive in Google Play. CIBC and TELUS noted this will happen “later today” and we will update the post when it’s live.
