The BlueAnt Z9i Bluetooth Headset is a fairly new to product to hit Canada. I’ve benn using this for the past week and impressed with the sound quality and more importantly the comfort. My main concern with Bluetooth headsets is a number of factors ranging from comfort, sound quality and battery life.

The BlueAnt Z9i was the winner of the CES 2007 Innovations Design and Engineering Award so it kinda informs you of the power and respect it has within the industry. Inside the package you will get the headset, an extra earbud in case you have a smaller ear, an extra earhook (plastic), USB charger and AC charger. In addition, the standard materials for operating the device effectively.

The benefits of the BlueAnt Z9i is that it is easy to use. First and foremost, the dimensions are 41 x 17.5 x 11.2 mm and it weighs in at only 11 grams so you’ll barely feel this on your ear. Remember this Bluetooth is really comfortable so you will most likely go to bed with it and wake up the next morning and see it’s on your ear. With that said, the earhook can be made custom to fit your ear as it can be bent to fit perfectly around your size and comfort level.

The Z9i has a range of 33 feet, a better range than other Bluetooth headsets we’ve reviewed that only had a 25 foot range. One of the concerns that I have is the charge time as it’s about 2 hours to get a full charge. You can charge this with either the USB connection, or the AC adapter. However, the estimated talk time I received was an average of 5 hours.

There are only 3 buttons: Mutli-function button (on/off, answer/hang-up, and voice isolation), Volume up button and volume down button. It’s unique feature is the “dual microphone with voice isolation and noise reduction”… this allows you have standard & max settings. Standard is for normal surroundings… Max could be for those times when you are surrounded by tons of noise and need to drown out what’s around you. When you change the standard and max settings the headset informs you via a message in your ear. It worked well for me.

The average price of this comes in around $130 Canadian and is available in Black and Red.
But it is wel worth a peek if you are looking to get a free phone this season.

The offer is that you can get a free pohone ($0.00) with a 2-year agreement. The phones are Nokia 2760, Nokia 3500, MOTORAZR V3 “Classic” and the MOTORAZR V3. In all honesty these are not the latest edition phones, but if you are looking for a solid device that can do the basics – like make phone calls, take a look at these as the price is right.

Once you choose your $0.00 phone you can choose your monthly plan. Fido has no monthly system access or extra network fees. The monthly plans range from $15 – $70 and are vastly different when it comes to the minutes you recieve.

The LG KEYBO is a texting dream and is available at TELUS and Koodo. This compact devise has a good music player, decent speakers, 2.0 megapixel camera, ability to surf the web and its full QWERTY keyboard is well designed. We played around with this beast for a bit and our initial thoughts are in the video below.

The KEYBO weighs 120 grams, dimensions are 102mm x 54mm x 16.5mm and is available in black and red. The external display (160 x 64 pixels) illuminates your contacts, messaging, history… when your music is playing it shows the album cover, artist, song. The internal display (320 x 240 pixels) is between the speakers and we felt this is somewhat small but certainly does its job. With its QWERTY keypad nicely spaced out it will be easy to use for texting, e-mail, IM and typing in any url for fast action to the web. The 2.0 camera is easy to use via the internal and external display.

This is our first – and very quick – review as we basically just opened up the box and started to record.. so it gives you an insight of how easy the KEYBO is to navigate and use:

It’s available for $49.99 on a 3-year contract, $99.99 on a 2-year and $249.99 on a 1-year. If you want to buy this outright it will cost you $299.99. More info at Telus

Over at Koodo you can get this for $225 outright, or $75 with the Tab. Koodo will also throw in a free Bluettoth headset. More here

Future Shop seems to be going all out to get the BlackBerry crowd on board.

Their newest promo lists the nationwide availability of the Telus BlackBerry Storm 9530 for $249.99 on a 3-year plan. To get you testing this out before you purchase they’ve set up demo days where you can schedule some time and speak with a Telus rep about the features and benefits. For a full list of times across Canada visit this link here.

In addition to the Storm – They have dropped the price of the BlackBerry Bold to $169.99 on a 3-year plan, and the price of the Curve to $0.00. And the kicker of the promo is a little holiday special we like to call a $100 gift card is included in your purchase. Pretty sweet deal for a Bold and Curve.

Dimensions are 104×56x13and weighs 107 grams with a 3.0” WQVGA touchscreen display that is 240×400 pixels.

There are other plans available such as: no contract for $349.99, 2-year for $99.99 and 1-year for 299.99.

This device is very cool, but it takes a bit of time to get used to all the features. Although it is easy to navigate your way around, to really get a full flavour of this phone you will need to set aside a few hours. Just like any touchscreen device to date, the keys are sensitive and close together… making us type incorrectly or enter the wrong number for text or phone calls. The call quality (Sending and receiving) is good and we did not experience any challenges or dropped calls.

When I first saw the Nokia E71 I was impressed. I had seen the pictures over the last few months and was eagerly awaiting its arrival into Canada – which certainly had a tough time as it was originally supposed to go to Fido, then Rogers made the brand change and took ownership of the sleek Smartphone.

This year was a good year for Nokia devices, they certainly put our products that target a specific market. They know how to make low end phones work (Nokia 6555), and with gaming they nailed it right on with the Nokia N95 8GB. Now with the Nokia E71you have a sleek device that weighs in at 127 grams and is only a mere 11 mm thin.

If you’re a business person using your Smartphone all day, this is honestly a device you should consider. It can do your e-mail, contacts, calendar, GPS, documents (presentations and worksheets) and has a full QWERTY keyboard with a display of 240×320. You will have no problem getting used to this phone as its easy to use and find your way around to the common applications you need. The steel backing is all metal and yes it does catch a great deal of fingerprints but that is your only issue when it comes to the E71.

In regards to the media functions, I was impressed with the speaker for the music – the sound quality is good and can hold up to 8GB (and comes with 2.5 mm earphones). The device has an impressive 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, autofocus and zoom. For the web – 3G and loads up fast and has no problem surfing with its crisp display. To navigate your way around you will have to use the middle directional pad which could cause a bit of frustration as we’re getting used to scrolling or swiping the screen for faster response times.

For the home screen Nokia created 2 of them – one for business and the other for personal. You can configure each according to your lifestyle. Have your documents, calendar, contacts and web on the business… then go for the media player, web, camera, clock and GPS on your personal side. This is a great option to have if you’re the person who continually checks your phone for new work e-mails. However, the only place I can see myself using something like the “mode shifting” is while I’m away on vacation.

The price point is certainly worth it. I’ve seen it around at several Rogers Plus locations for $49.99 promo on a 3-year contract with a minimum $45 voice and data plan… but other locations are currently selling this for $99.99.

The BlackBerry Storm 9530 has been released from TELUS. The first touchscreeen by RIM is an incredible starting point and while playing around with this beast we found it incredibly easy to use.

In our first review we took a general overview of the device – everything from the 3.25 inch HGVA display (480×360), the cut and paste features, the 3.2 megapixel camera (with flash and autofocus)… all the way to the fast browser and dominant media features. This certainly has it all, plus the assurance of its e-mail backed by BlackBerry.

The keyboard can either be used portrait (20 key SureType keyboard which I’m not a fan of), or landscape with its full QWERTY keyboard. The touchscreen features are well designed as you actually have to click the letters or numbers you want so it still feels like the BlackBerry with physical keys. . I actually like this feature compared to other touchscreen devices as you will not hit a key by accident. The cut and paste feature is simple to you by simply highlighting the areas you want and with a couple clicks you are into typing your message. Other cool additions are when you hold your finger over a message it searches your inbox for similar messages and groups them together.

The weight is at 155 grams and feels good in the hand. It comes with 1 GB internal memory and can pack in another 8 GB which TELUS is throwing in when they officially launch.

The browser is a full HTML browser and we tested our site and a heavier site (CNN.com) and the speed was impressive and showed the pages as if they would on your computer at home/work. All you have to do to zoom in is click the screen, or use the magnifying glass shortcut on the menu bar.

There is only one key are that I saw that was questionable: Since you have to physically tap the screen continually it will be interesting to see how long until the mechanism gives. Also, if you are putting this in your pockets all the time I’m positive dust will gather between the keys and make them unresponsive at times. This of course is too early to tell.

Overall, in our first review there is not much that we can say needs improving. The speed was good, accelerometer was responsive, music was loud (comes with a 3.5 mm headphone jack), the pictures were good quality and the device as a whole was solid.

We’ll follow-up with our second review shortly. Enjoy the video:

The Nokia N95 is a wicked device for gaming. In our review we did not focus on the standard phone details such as text, contacts, calendar etc.. you will see that the N95 is a gem and comes loaded with a 5 megapixel camera that can take clear pictures and videos.

In addition, the graphics are simply amazing with the screen able to rotate from portrait to landscape with its slider feature. One thing that can be improved on is the keypad as the numbers are fairly close together but this is such a minor worry when you have 8GB in such a lightweight multimedia devise.

Enjoy:
