the only problem with the XPERIA is WinMo 6.1.. but it's a good start for Sony Ericson in the smartphone market

I heard a few weeks away now, finally.
Then it will be obsolete when it's actually made available.

I am with Bell, not Rogers... but what is the big hype with the Xperia?

I think it's the first smartphone they are putting out, plus it has these "panels" that you can download, basically apps that you can customize a bit

nothing that can be shown as it was in a conversation with a rogers guy. Honestly though it will be a big push for them and hopefully people will still be interested in the XPERIA. It's been forever to release this thing and they are finishing up testing ;)

I used to be a 100% Sony Ericsson fanboy...but I'm not so sure about the Xperia. I was sorely unimpressed with the build quality of my SE W580i; numerous cracked keys (from only moderate use, no games), sketchy slider mechanism, the screen died twice (both times requiring repairs).

Sony Ericsson also seems to have missed the boat in the recent movement towards smartphones (or innovation in any sense, for that matter). The Xperia is their only smartphone, and it was first announced more than a year ago.

There's a hands-on here:
http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=189&p=245

The reviewer clearly states that it's still in a very beta-ish state...but why release even a demo when it seems so poorly put together?

Sony's head of North American operations has stepped down, following poor sales in 2008 (while everyone else was making smartphones, they kept making the same old phone in different casings)...so maybe they'll head in a better direction now, but unfortunately my confidence has been shaken.

SE has released some very cool, well made phones in the past, so here's hoping they can get back on the tech train and make some sweet phones!

Hopefully the news of SE tanking will still bring the XPERIA to Canada. :o

"Units shipped in the quarter were 14.5 million, a decrease of 35% compared to the same period of last year and in line with our March 20, 2009 interim announcement of approximately 14 million units. Sales for the quarter were Euro 1,736 million, a decrease of 36% from a year ago. Sales decreased primarily as a result of continued weak consumer confidence and de-stocking in the retail and distribution channels.

Gross margin declined both year-on-year and sequentially, reflecting a change in the product mix, material write-offs, and exchange rate volatility.

“As expected, the first quarter of this year has been extremely challenging for Sony Ericsson due to continued weak global demand. We are aligning our business to the new market reality with the aim of bringing the company back to profitability as quickly as possible,” said **** Komiyama, President, Sony Ericsson. “The management intends to pursue an additional cost saving program targeting a further annual operating expense reduction of Euro 400 million, to be completed by mid-2010.”

The company’s initial cost saving program targeting annual operating expense reductions of Euro 300 million by the end of the first half of 2009, including a workforce reduction of 2,000 headcount, has now been completed. A total of Euro 187 million restructuring charges have been recorded compared to the initial estimated costs of Euro 300 million.

The additional cost saving program announced today will include a further reduction in the global workforce of approximately 2,000 people. It is estimated that new restructuring charges of Euro 200 million will be needed to complete this program.

The X1 would have been a solid device when it was announed. They should have done a global release of it and got all the people using it when the hype was high.

I rather get a BlackBerry Storm (if it comes out with Rogers). Bigger screen, better e-mail plus their app store.

^ could not agree more.
Too much time has passed and if the X1 was a touchscreen I would consider. Plus the screen is too small. :(

screen is small, but it is also smaller than the Niagara and Pre. I don't think that SE has an app store? does it?

no app store yet, but they are coming out with something soon... no word on when. They like Palm have used up 8 of their lives.

^ not sure if I agree... Palm will make it through. They have developed a solid piece of technology that I think business people and consumers will eat up. If they keep the hype (not like the X1) they will be back in the game.

If you are comparing the X1 over the Pre, then I would also choose the Pre also... looks more fun plus not WinMo 6.1.

The X1 will come out in 2010 the rate it's chugging along. We will most likely see the new iPhone before it arrives.

Out of all the upcoming SE devices, W705, X1 AND c905 i would choose the c905. for some reason I was excited about the xperia but saw some video and it looks too small for me.

Off topic ... what ever happened to the Rogers BB Storm?

don't worry, the x1 is coming, expect the c905 very very soon too.

agree, the screen is way too small on the X1. Either a 8900, Bold or iPhone for smartphones on Rogers.

Is there any truth to Rogers getting the Storm? This seems to be lost somewhere. Remember this image from BlackBerry Cool?

Perhaps they will instead get the latest SE with Symbian (release date Q4) instead of the old and broken xperia?
