When using sliding keyboard the lighting turns off or does not come on? any thoughts??

I assume you mean the back light for the keyboard keys. The back light turns on when the location you are in is darker than a preset threshold. If you are in a bright area like outside, the back light does not turn on. When in a dark room, it turns on. There is a light sensor on the top left of your phone (when in portrait orientation). If you cover it up, the back lighting should turn on.
I have heard some people who prefer the back light be on all the time or at least turn on earlier. As far as I know, there is no way to change the calibration of the back lighting to turn on at a different light threshold. Covering the light sensor is the only way to keep it on, but it will also affect auto brightness and will cause your phone display to dim if you use auto brightness.
