Hi I am a new member, but I am experienced with cell forums on another site with me contributing to 250+ posts. I am a long time follower of mobilesyrup news/frontpage and even commented on articles using another name.

But my question is:

http://mobilesyrup.com/2010/12/14/rogers-and-fido-start-new-policy-will-unlock-your-device-for-50/

Rogers now offers to unlock your device for $50.

But my question i whether they will unlock an iPhone?

Take it to a 3rd party and get it unlocked for $10 - $20.

I know that, I unlock all my phones through online venders (cellunlock.net)

But no one unlocks iPhones

I don't really believe that absolutely no one would unlock an iPhone. I don't know where you live, but I'd take it to the nearest China town.

It is impossible to unlock an iPhone through a third party, especially an iPhone 4 running 4.1

Yeah, no. It's not impossible. (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=unlock+iphone+4+running+4.1)

Yup its impossible

If you read any of the links you would know that it is impossible to unlock with the 4.1 baseband

Ya, but I like to jailbreak my iPhone, 4.2 doesn't have a full jailbreak yet

But 4.1 is impossible you say ? so why not go 4.2 xD ?

Adding "baseband" to the end of the search says otherwise.

If you are sure it's impossible, why bother asking?

Impossible through a third party, but unlocking iPhones is possible by only Apple and Carriers. My question was whether Rogers allowed it and included in its unlocking policy.

4.1 is possible to jailbreak, but not to unlock. I like having my iPhone jailbroken and have special jailbroken apps.

Yes, the new Rogers unlocking policy will work on the iPhone. Check out the post on the iPhone in Canada site.

Rogers unlocking policy is basically useless.. Not many people will buy the full unsubsidized price for their phones. Most will be on contract. But you must finish your contract before they will unlock it.. will you wait 3 years to unlock your iPhone 4 from now?

Exactly, and if you are paying unsubsidized price, why not get the iphone at apple store..

Still so much cheaper having it done for 10-20 dollars at pretty much any cellphone store.

You can do it yourself. Just downgrade the baseband with an older firmware and wait for the dev team to come out with a proper unlock.

You cannot downgrade the baseband on current firmwares!!

I got my unlock code for 1 cent earlier. I haven't unlocked my device yet, even though my device doesn't have warranty anymore.

If you stay in your home country, unlocking is not as useful. If you travel a lot, you can buy a local sim card and avoid paying roaming fees.

I don't see Rogers unlocking a lot of phones. Most people that want them unlocked have a term and want to use a foreign SIM when travelling to avoid the costs associated with roaming. Most people don't want to unlock a phone they've had for 3 years. Most 3 year old phones are only worth $50, iPhone being an exception.
