Motorola has announced that we will not be getting the Android 2.1 software upgrade that was promised. What does this mean? Once the US motoblur owners are all on 2.1 you will see very little new apps come out for 1.5. Already there are many apps we cann't get. As well there will be no upgrades for the browser so you will see an increasing number of websites you won't be able to load(like anything using flash).
Call your carrier and ask for the 2.1 upgrade or to take your phone back and give you a phone that does have 2.1.
I bought my phone 2 months ago and was ***ured that the Backflip would get 2.1 get like in the US. Now I've found out its not ture. Already I can't get apps like Kobo and Angrybirds. Can you imagine how obsolete these phones will be in a year? And I JUST started a 3year contract!
Call your carrier and complain!
I know it's not fun but if you dont succeed,
you can always and root your phone and flash the 2.1 us rom

From what I understand the carreir has to purchase a customized version of the software for their network. So far the Canadian carriers have not opted to do this even though the US carriers are currently rolling out 2.1 on their networks.
I bought my phone from my carrier(telus) two months ago and they(telus) at that time ***ured me that they would be getting 2.1 for my phone. My beef is with them.

That isn't any fault of TELUS. Motorola made the decision to stop the roll-out of 2.1.
I haven't seen any news on TELUS, Bell or Rogers indicating that 2.1 would be available for the Moto Backflip.
If you spoke with someone at TELUS then the rep was wrong. I've known for a few months now that there are no plans to roll out 2.1 yet (for that phone).

Same, I heard this from a Cx a few months ago now. It's not related to the Carriers.

It IS,however, the carrier's decision to carry products with outdated operating systems. It's decided well ahead of time whether or not they will be doing upgrades to the OS.
As a customer service gesture, it would be nice of Bell to inform customers ahead of time that people that buy such products be informed that they'll be stuck with an archaic platform. But considering that it's Bell, that might be asking too much. I would reason that they have all the reason in the world to dodge questions about upgrades and hope that consumers bite on whatever they throw out.

You do realize, that by buying the Best phone on the market today, Your phone is a lump in 6 months compared to the the phones on the market then right?
Either bite the bullet and start paying MSRP, or Have some cheese to go with your Whine.

Well aware of the fat pace of change in this industry, though calling the top of the line phone a lump 6 months from now is a stretch. More than 6 months down the road, the Nexus One is still selling hot. Thinking that the iPhone 4 will be a "lump" in January is a ridiculous.
I do buy all my phones MSRP (not sure where you would have though otherwise...or even why that matters in the first place lol). I'm just motioning that the carriers INTENTIONALLY do not make these updates available and that it would be great customer service gesture if they did. Seeing that Bell prefers to keep it ambiguous, in my opinion, is a bit of a disservice to customers.

In my opinion, the consumer needs to educate themselves more. When it comes to what OS a phone is running and future updates, the consumer needs to do the research.
They can't blame the carrier, manufacturer or even the OS developer (in Androids case). If you buy a phone, expect that it is as-is and anything that changes after is an added bonus.
Technology is constantly changing. We can't expect all these parties to invest even more money into an outdated product. That would be a backwards step.
If you want a phone that has a guaranteed OS upgrade coming it's way, buy an iPhone or Nexus One. With the iPhone, you will get at least 3 major OS updates and the Nexus One has endless possibilities.
Just my thoughts on the matter.
