When can you get a hardware upgrade?
Do you need to complete the full three year contract?

No you don't need to complete full 3 year contract. I have finished 2 years of the contract as of September, I asked rogers recently and they told me I am eligible for a hardware upgrade.

You must complete 24 months and must resign for a another 3 year term to get the best rebate on the handset. I work for rogers and do this on a daily bases...Any questions let me know..Cheers

Upgrading Hardware is no need any of the registration. Just needs protect key, it is very good way to use life long hardware. If you upgrade hardware then it will safe and secure more.

Ya, now it's 30 months for a HUP. That totally sucks.

Hey for you guys that just lost it or were just about to get it, listen to my story. I just lost mine, well not anymore, but I was elegible for a HU in Sept, but I'm waiting on the Focus, so when I read today's story I went and phoned Rogers, they told me that yes I did lose my upgrade, I immediatly said I wanted to talk to a CSR who can help me get it back, they transfered me and after some talking to the CSR I told them that switching between carriers is easier then ever and for those that know how to drive a bargain and that Telus/Bell will pay to break you out of a contract to a certain $$$ value you can use it as leverage against Rogers. Thats what I did, I now have a HU # and once November roles around and firm date is put on the Focus I put my # in to the CSR reps and they will ship me my new phone at the HU price and renew my contract.

Excuse me if I rant again about this... but....

This action by Rogers to extend the HUP to 30 months sheds light on how screwed up the cell phone subsidy system is in Canada.

There is no transparency at the moment regarding exactly what we are paying for as part of our cell phone subscription service.

i.e. How much money goes towards paying for your cell phone service and how much money goes towards paying back cell phone subsidies (not just for yourself for everyone)

I am not against people owning expensive smartphones, but the thought that people should get them subsidised is completely ridiculous. In other places in the world your phone bill comprises your cell phone service charges and then your monthly repayment for the purchase of your phone over the span of your contract.

So if you buy a phone outright there is no difference in cost, because your monthly cell phone bill does not include repayments. If you want to get out of a contract there is no ECF. All you have to do is pay off the remaining amount you owe on your phone. No shady algorithms to determine how much you owe.

As customers, if we didnt have to pay for everybody else's phone subsidies our actual phone service costs would drop dramatically. People shouldn't be punished by cell providers if they buy their phone outright.

The whole wireless system right now is just screwed up, it's not just the HUP, we have the highest bills, the longest contract and the fewest options. But its the bigger picture, unless you live in Toronto, you don't have much choice in wireless providers because our population is to spread out over such a LARGE area, infact the biggest country in the world with one of the smallest populations. It's that fact that new companies can't start up to give us those options of having cheaper contracts and buying phones outright. It's to expensive for them to set up new networks, because they can't use the GSM standard, they have to use those funky WIND bands and now they are talking about actioning off another set of non standard bands for more carriers. But how are those gonna function if they have to build even more towers to use their odd bands and then having to get manufacturers to bother including that band in phones.

But then again buying phones outright is an absolute scam as well. When Engadget/gizmodo and others did the tear downs of the iphone 4, they found that it cost about 188$ to get all the parts for the phone, and that number might even be a bit high, now factor in marketing, licencing fees and all that and profit, and maybe double the price of the phone so about 400$, but what you pay for an unlocked iPhone is about double even that. These prices are kept artificially high to make having a contract a viable option. If I could get those phones at around that 400$ price point I'd have no problem paying that price and not going the subsidy route.

I just checked on the Rogers site after I logged in, no where on the site does it say 30 months. Unless it's for new customers, under Wireless Support it states the following:

"How long do I have to be with Rogers before I can get an upgrade?

If you are a Rogers Wireless customer currently using a Smartphone on 1) a Data plan or 2) Voice & Data bundled plan and you wish to upgrade to a new Smartphone, you are eligible to upgrade after 24 months. For customers with only Voice service (no Data plan) wishing to upgrade to a Smartphone or customers upgrading from a non-Smartphone to a Smartphone or Data device, you are eligible to upgrade after 24 months. Your account must also be in good credit standing at the time of the upgrade."

Unless they haven't updated the website yet. I'm still going to try for my upgrade next month if the website hasn't been updated yet.

I suggest phoning *611 and talking to a CSR about your account then, because Rogers doesn't update the site very well and that information may be old. I am an exsisting Rogers customer, have been for about 9 years now and that update to 30 months for HUP effected my account.
