This is awesome, thanks for the info.

Did they mention when pre-ordering was to start?

Nex

She said they weren't doing any pre-ordering.

She also said stock would be limited, the store I was at is getting 'less than 10' and that would be more than most.

499 no contract, so probably $149 on a 3 year.

I think it will be 99,95$ on a 3 year contract.

The Legend was 399.95$ no contract and 49.95$ on contract.

The Galaxy S is 599.95$ no contract and 149.95$ on contract.

So if we follow the logic, it will probably be 99.95$ :)

Not fair :( I wish Telus would get this or hopefully get something even better very soon!
Nothing is enough for me to go back to Bell, not even the Desire Z.

the legend was actually $80 w/3-year contract.

t-mobile G2 is $199 on a 3-year, so I wouldn't expect this one to be much cheaper. It's a high-end device, you'll pay a high-end price for it.

I think the price was leaked a few weeks ago anyway.

I think they charge $75 bucks and may force a month subscription.

Not sure though, but they do charge a fair amount.

You could just unlock it yourself.

The Samsung smartphones can be unlocked for free, (for now) but you will have to pay for HTC phones. I paid $20 to unlock my Hero and that seems to be the going rate.

Bell can or may but it is much more expensive.

I say HTC Desire Z will be the android to get for those that thinks 4" Galaxy S is too large.

If you don't care for hardware keyboard, I think Galaxy S is the one to get.
If not, Desire Z.

Bell got the best lineup of Android now.

Coming from a blackberry bold, i'm playing it safe getting a keyboard.

I wish it did have a 4" screen though. I don't find the galaxy to be too big at all.

I do find the galaxy too plastic-y and iPhone-ish though

Galaxy S has a better screen and Camera, but just about everything else is better or equal on the desire Z.

I also prefer HTC Sense to Samsung's Overlay on Android. (Personal preference, Sense just has options I feel are actually usefull like downloading maps through Tom Tom right on to the device so you don't have to use data at all for GPS).

I watched a couple of youtube post on Tmobile G2s (same phone) overclocked to 1.4GHz, WOW they fly. :D

The Camera on the Desire Z will be 5MP with LED Flash, The i9000m is just a 5MP.

Also, The MSRP is 499.95, the Contract pricing hasn't been announced yet, but as soon as It is I'll do my best to let you guys know. The Hardware Pricing Grid is set to be Updated on Oct 25th As far as I can tell.

You can buy it at 30 day pricing from a Bell store but you have to activate it with Bell, meaning it has to be on a plan for minimum 30 days (to cancel the plan).

Then you need to get it unlocked.

What I am doing is activating it on my friend's account on 30 day pricing, then taking it off right away.

If you can find a way to get it unlocked right away then yes this is possible, but Bell wont unlock for the first 30 days and usually 3rd party websites don't get the lock-codes for 1-2 weeks after launch of a device in Canada.

Cheapest base plan is $30 for a month + $35 for activation + pay to unlock (wherever you go to get it unlocked).

They told me in the store that people can actually buy them outright, and bring them to other carriers. They did not mention the 30-day contract thing, but I have heard that before.

I signed up to bell anyway so I don't have to worry about it, but from what I understand, you can simply just buy the phone. (And unlock it yourself)

Easiest way is to probably go in and ask, though I don't expect decent stock levels any time soon.

This depends on the dealer. By Bell mandate they aren't supposed to sell them without activation... but it may be possible if you find a dealer that will just sell it. When it gets released usually there's a few days delay untill the lock-codes are available as well, just for consideration.

This is Against Bell Corporate Policy, So if you wanna be a **** find someone to do it and threaten to report them unless they give you a mad price! :p

It may be different for 3rd party dealers, but Bell Corporate Stores are not permitted to allow a phone to leave the store unless it's activated or attached to an account.

The price will be 129.95$ on a 3-year contract, there is a 50$ in-store credit at The Source so it comes at 79.95$ which I think is really a great price for that kind of phone.

Hrm.

- Battery life isn't amazing (though apparently HTC EVO 4G batteries will work in this phone, and they are much better for life)
- Loose-Hinge problems on the flip out keyboard in the G2 (US version on Tmobile, but that seems to be hit or miss and that device launched a month ago so might be corrected now)
- No front facing camera for video calling
- Not stock android (but I think HTC Sense 2 looks decent enough)

Those are the only nit-picks, but this is the phone I will be getting. :D

This kind of makes me wish I waited, but my phone was broken and I couldn't wait a month and a half...still happy with my legend, it is sleeker than any smartphone on the market IMO, and I think it is a good progression from ****ty slider dumbphone to first smartphone. plus paying only $80 for it was nice as a broke-*** recent graduate

next smartphone I get, in two years, will be the high-end model.

I am on Rogers and plan to unlock this phone. My only concern is on what effect this will have on the warranty and claims? Anyone have any more information on this??

Meadus101
10-30-2010, 11:37 PM
Currently, There is a Year Manufacturer warranty on all devices Bell Carries.

The Warranty is still available when the phone isn't activated. Upon sale of the phone the receipt goes into the warranty system and you have 1 yr from that date.

Enhanced warranty Services ($7/mo Insurance) Can only be added to an active Bell account.

Not sure if Unlocking Voids the manufacturer Warranty though (I don't see why It would)

- Not stock android (but I think HTC Sense 2 looks decent enough)

The HTC Desire Z Runs Android 2.2 with HTC Sense 2.0 So it is an android Device with HTC Enhancements.

I also love the fact that here is a virtual keyboard if you only need to type a few words and you don't want to pop out the hard keyboard.

That was really stupid back in the time when I had my N97, it has none virtual keyboard...

I think battery life is becoming an issue for all phones. That said, this is better than average for most high end android phones due to the efficient processor. I can live with it.

I believe the loose hinge was primarily a first-run hardware problem that may be resolved by now. We'll see though I guess. I have not seen a huge uproar about it.

Does anyone actually use front-facing cameras? I don't know anyone who uses it - no big deal for me.

I actually quite like sense. The bigger issue I have is with the hardware locked ROM that limits hackability. This could hurt later when gingerbread comes out and people want a hacked ROM.

Have any of you signed up on the Bell page for updates on this launch? I not heard a peep from this. I don't understand why they would offer this sign-up if they were not going to update us/communicate on this phone. I realize for marketing purposes but the transparency of that type of ploy would only backfire on them. At least there is the entry on the contest.

If it helps I phoned the two closest Bell stores today and got some confusion but some good news.

Confusion: Both dealers had no idea if they would have the device on Nov 3rd, but both said they have not heard any news on delays...

Good News: Both dealers stated they had not received any calls about the device. One stated that the only calls they get these days are regarding Iphone 4s. And I quote: "People are Iphone brainwashed! The last 4 calls I had today were all about Iphone availability."

I spent some time in a Bell store today and all was explained to me as follows:

1. They had a dummy phone with a hinge that worked perfectly well. Shook it and played around for a while.

2. For their launches phones are shipped the day of. Those of you planning on being there for the opening will be out of luck until the courier arrives.

3. Although us enthusiasts adore and recognize this amazing phone, we sometimes need to be reminded we represent a tiny portion of the market. I asked about interest and they said not one call or inquiry compared to multiple daily calls / visits on the iphone 4. Hopefully this indicates getting the phone will not be a problem.

4. I am purchasing and hope to use on Rogers when unlocking codes are available. Price for this be as follows:
Non-contract price will be $499.99
Activation fee: $35
One month of phone at lowest price: $30 (needs to be activated on store, but can activate 30 day cancellation notice same day).
Sim Card Fee: $5
TOTAL BEFORE TAX: $570

5. Finally, if you know someone on Bell, you can activate on their account for only $20 additional (vs. $70 above), then return sim card to their phone when you leave.

Maybe Futureshop or Bestbuy will not force activation if they have non-contract price available?

Dropped my my local Bell store tonight (about 5 hours ago) to see how many Z units had arrived (three as it turned out). We had spoken several times this week on the pending shipment. The rep said she had already sold one and then proceeded to process my purchase. Never had to wait til the AM after all!!

I checked out both remaining units to compare the much maligned hinge. Both felt "soft" and lacking in the snap which I've seen on some G2 YouTube postings. Having nothing else (hands on) to compare it with, I went ahead and bought it (no contract price) with a clear understanding that it might be returned after checking it out further at home.

Alas, the hinge issue is real...Love the phone, the feel and heft of the unit and the keyboard itself but the hinge is a big letdown. When I pick up the phone say by the upper edge, the keyboard will just sag or droop straight down. Very little if any resistance.

Its going back tomorrow.

I don't think they will.

Since it's a bell exclusive, they don't want people moving it to other carriers, and will use it's exclusivity to justify not selling without at least a month-to-month contract.

That being said, why don't you just buy the G2 in the states?

T-Mobile G2 uses different frequencies than the Bell version. Not compatible with 3G in Canada unless you use Wind or Mobilicity.

Also, spoke with Best Buy Mobile again. They will have the phone available mid-November and after the first month of sales, will sell with no activation.

I just picked mine up from Best Buy in Edmonton and they had 30 in the one store. :)
Bell corporate store down the street didn't even have them yet. LOL!

Now to get it unlocked and setup on Telus.
Bell couldn't touch my current plan for minutes or data so this is my solution.

*edit*
$499 with no contract... for obvious reasons.

T-Mobile G2 uses different frequencies than the Bell version. Not compatible with 3G in Canada unless you use Wind or Mobilicity.

Also, spoke with Best Buy Mobile again. They will have the phone available mid-November and after the first month of sales, will sell with no activation.

Exactly. I want to use it on AT&T (850/1900MHz 3G) rather than T-Mobile (1700MHz 3G). I'm currently using a Rogers HTC Dream.

I live in Montreal. I called both Best Buys and Future Shops, and none of 'em are willing to sell it without activating the phone. How did you get the phone without activation?

Just got my phone today, so happy :) This phone exceeds my expectations so far.....simply amazing.

I was worried about the hinge issue, but mine is solid. The guy said the hinge issue is supposed to be fixed in cdn versions, not sure how accurate is that.

If there's anybody in Ottawa looking for the D-Z, Rideau Bell Mobility has a bunch, others stores are still waiting for their shipments.

When you hold it upside down does it flap open?

Mine doesn't open unless you shake it. I'm pretty happy with mine.

Nope, its pretty solid. I jiggled it a couple of times and it only started to open a bit, but did never dropped down. I think I would have to violently jiggle it to get it open.

Hmm...it doesnt take much for mine to flop down. Dont know if it's a big deal though. Only if you drop it or hhold it upside down i guess.

Anyone else having delays in 3g activation? I've been waiting hours now, still wifi only

Got mine this morning but my sim wont be activated until tommorow *grumble grumble*, but I have played with it some on wifi and I love this phone.

As for the hinge the Bell dealer I went to had 5. The first 2 they pulled out the hinge seemed VERY slippery. The 3rd was slippery, but not too bad (felt a bit more stiff). If I hold it just by the base, upside-down it droops a tad, but there's some G2 demos online where it slides if held sideways too and mine certainly isn't that drastic.

After a while of playing with it I don't even mind the hinge being a little slippery, makes it very easy to slide open quickly when needed.

my hinge is not solid like other people here.
It falls when held upside down, however... i dont see myself holding it that way...... i mean why would you hold it on the side upside down?

When i hold my sideways, they key board slips out on it own. Any ideal on when stores will get a next batch of phones?

on the side, it needs to be completely vertical to the ground then it slips out for me also... but why would you hold your phone like that?

Mine won't slip out until it is partially upside down.

TBH my only concern about the hinge is longetivity and the potential for it to pop open when dropped, and thus increasing the chance of damage.

I'd rather have this than a phone made of gl*** though.

actually... i think that if it falls, the fact that it can open will reduce the internal shock... the energy is transferred to moving the hinge... lol but then once opened it is more fragile

the keyboard on this phone is wonderful. Just getting used to shortcuts etc.

I actually have the read the manual to figure everything out :)

With so much cool stuff on this phone you can almost forget that.. it actually makes phone calls too. My mom called me on my phone and I was looking at it like - OMG what is this feature - HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

I'm coming from a bold 9000...the keyboard on that is amazing and I don't think this will beat it.

That being said, I'm super picky over keyboards after my bold, and this is a very good keyboard in my opinion. Even the onscreen keyboard is usable for me.

Does anyone know if you can install swype on this? It's amazing on the galaxy.

I took 1 year contract and cancelled right away... I live in QC so I am under protection that the cancellation fee cannot be more than the DISCOUNT*(monthsleft/term), so at 1 year it was 25$ discount * 11/12 = 23$ penalty fee.

I wasn't charged an activation fee of 35$ but i had to pay the 1st month of 30$+tax

I walked into BB and told them what the Bell rep told me.
No contract pricing @$499, 3rd party retailers can sell without activation or account tie in, and launch date November 3rd. This is for Bell Mobility Alberta and may not apply cross country.

The guys at BB were cool with it once they confirmed it with one of their managers. We were talking openly about device modding and such.
The only other weird thing they mentioned was if inventory counts were single digit they couldn't sell off contract but that seemed like an internal policy.

Spoke with an HTC sales manager and he wasn't aware of it being a huge issue.

EXACTLY!

I didn't think my device had a problem with the keyboard hinge until I read about it here. Thanks for making me realize my Z is plagued with issues!!!
;)

All kidding aside, I LOVE IT!!!
Fantastic device and the perfect replacement to my Touch Pro 2 EXCEPT that the keyboard on the TP2 is better for me. 5 rows with larger buttons beats 4 rows with smaller buttons.
If I recall correctly the whole reason for the z-hinge was to allow for more room on the top row but my Z actually has LESS room there than my TP2.
The speed/functionality/usability of the device is so good I'm not even sure how much I'll use the slideout keyboard. The on-screen one works so well it makes me think I should have picked up the HD. I might just leave the keyboard behind for the next device purchase.

Has anyone used the email function yet?

While I receive email fine - it appears to be deleting mail off my server.

Love the device and the feature set but for me one key deal breaker is the inability to directly sync my Z to Outlook and have my selected Outlook file folders sync to the device.
This has been available on every WinMo device (via Activesync) I've owned for the past decade so I am very surprised to see this issue has NOT been resolved despite being ***ured it had for 2.2.
What HAS been resolved is the Calendar and Contacts sync... which I couldn't imagine WHY it wasn't part of the initial HTC Sync/Android feature set.

Got it working perfectly on Telus so I hate to ditch it.
Reconsidering the HD7 or HD Surround now.
Trade anyone?
:o
