I was reading up on the niagara and the gemini and stuff. So i see that the Gemini is 3G and stuff like that. But i dont get something. Ok so lets look at the 8900, no 3G, lets look at the 8330. 3G? see thats what is wierd. Is the 8330 3G. The add says 3G on Bell, but is it?. Also my LG Vantage says "Qualicom 3G" on the back, there is no way in hell that is 3G. The browser is S...L...O...W! so what is the deal with these phones, what is 3G and what isn't

Well....idk how to explain this but ok, but 3G sometimes means 3rd generation of internet or something (im not sure), not all 3G have fast internet.. and Qualicom 3G is faster than edge but slower than 3G.

Okay, I think I should start carrying a definition of 3G in my signature from now on. 3G is a generation of wireless technology, in this case, the 3rd. Qualcomm makes the chipsets for virtually all EVDO CMDA units, which are all 3G. For what's relevant for us Canadians, Bell and Telus have EVDO Rev 0 and Rev A, Rev A being capable of offering speeds similar to HSPA, which is the 3G technology that Rogers/Fido uses. However, HSDPA is capable of higher speeds than EVDO Rev A. In a years time, Bell and Telus will also have HSPA, and a little further down the road, all carriers will be 4G LTE networks. In short, 3G is a generation of wireless technology. Different 3G technologies provide different speeds. Any 3G unit will have better transmission speeds than 3G technologies, such as Rogers EDGE or Telus/Bell 1XRTT.

bells network is 3rd generation within cdma but the speed and transfer rate on the rogers network is much faster. The bell network that they our moving towards in 2010 is third generation umts. The amount of information transfered per second is like 384Mbit/s to 128Mbit/s. So the clear it up again the technology is referred to as third generation (3G) but the equipment used is different between the company's some better than the other like Rogers network. If i have something wrong in my explanation please correct me though.

You were close Serens.

The download speeds for the TELUS/Bell network are about 3.5MPS in 93% of the canadian population. Rogers has 7.3MPS in about 17% of canada. The rest of Rogers is still on EDGE (2nd Gen).

Bell/TELUS are switching to HSPA+ which is 3.5G and then to LTE after about a year and a half (4G).

The new network they are working on is going to be the fastest in North America.

I am hoping that some of the new competitors step it up and upgrade now....Rogers won't be far behind, im sure.
