I just moved from Blackberry Mike to iPhone with hopes that the Telus signal would be better. Wrong ***umption. I am experiencing alot of dropped calls ( 27 today) and whenever I lose signal, I have to reboot the phone for it to re-aquire. I have called Telus I don't know how many times and Apple about the same issues. Telus is pointing to the Hardware and Apple is pointing to the network. I have changed the phone, changed the SIM card and done a gazillion other tech things that don't work.

How on earth do you get out of this contract? I am not receiving reasonable service. I have 34 months left on contract and Telus is telling me I need to pay 600.00 to get out of this. Seems pretty unfair to me.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Any similar problems would be comforting...lol

P.S. I'm in Kingston, ON

You could be in a dead spot, but it could be the phone too.

One thing you can do is ask your local TELUS Corporate Store to come test another HSPA phone at your house (or wherever you are having the issue). If it is happening everywhere, then it is most likely the phone.

As for getting out of the contract, TELUS will throw "We cannot guarantee service" at you. You'll be stuck with the contract no matter what.

Anyone with the same device in your area having the same issues? I've watched friends with the same phone have the same issues... Its the Iphone, in most cases. One friend calls his the "I" because its not much of a phone. (no offence to fans)

You could try getting the statements from both in writing and going to the CRTC and BBB. Most likely to get it in writing you will have to write them .... Physically I mean.

Good Luck!

I signed a 3 year contract (nearly 3 years ago now) with Telus, shortly after moving to a new location. The phone I wanted (and purchased) was a Palm Treo. After taking it home I discovered that it would drop every call. It was in fact total junk (at least as far as the phone part of the equation went)

After taking the phone back (to whence it came) I was persuaded to take home a Motorola Q, which was not what I really wanted, but at least it worked (most of the time) and dropped calls were only an occasional happening (I was unable to get out of the contract)

I will add that my daughter has an iPhone and when she visits me her calls drop out frequently..... I know now that I live in a weak signal area, and that I have to be very, very, choosy, about what particular phone I purchase. All the Blackberry models I have tried work great, and a Blackberry is what I am using currently.

Perhaps you are experiencing similar problems to me AVguy...... If you do ascertain that is what the problem is, I would advise to go back to where the phone was purchased, and to persuade them to give you something that will work.

One thing I have heard is that Telus/Bell have configured their new HSPA network to make soft handoffs between towers (you'll technically be connected to 2 towers at once, just like the old CDMA network), wheras carriers in the United States (AT&T and T-Mobile) use hard handoffs(instantaneous switching).

This can cause unadaptive hardware (such as the iPhone) to lose signal completely, drop calls, etc because it doesn't like Telus' set-up.

Other manufacturers (namely HTC/Motorola/RIM) have adapted their hardware to support both methods, while Apple hasn't.

I live in Napanee and go to Kingston at least once a month. I have an HTC hero and have had no issues (none that I can remember) while in your city. I am usually near or around the area of the Cararaqui Mall or the Theatre by Best Buy.

I switched from mike to HSPA and have had dropped call issues since switching. Not anything close to what you are experiencing, only one or two a week at most.

If my call does get dropped it is within 30-40 secs of the call. The funny thing is after having the call dropped, redialing the number, the call never gets dropped the second time.

My daughter has the iphone and had not experienced the problems you are having.

I agree with most of what was already stated that it most likely is a phone issue. Let us know how you make out and what if any changes where made to fix your issue.

Hey Jim,

I just drove up to TO on Friday and had them switch out the Iphone for the 3rd time. I am still experiencing the same issue. Not as many dropped calls today but definately the phone will not re-aquire signal when I do drop. This is painful. I called Telus again and they have logged another ticket. Not sure why as they have never responded to the other tickets.

I may have to do this as tech support is no help at all.....They just keep logging tickets without any real resolve to the problem.

I have been contemplating moving over to Rogers. Is their network any better or would it be a crap shoot like my present provider?

I am on the same network with for Bell, with a Blackberry bold 9700 in Kingston as well, and I do travel around the city a fair bit. The only place I have noticed any real issues is at SLC. But from what I hear, Rogers especially down by the waterfront closer to the college is really on the poorer end of the deal.

If you're on a contract right now, that's not an option for you unfortunately. And really, I'm not sure it would be that much better on Rogers. Maybe 2G fallback would save your signal sometimes?
